Hoping someone can help out with a problem my son-in-law has with his 95 auto 4.5 petrol curiser not starting. Doesn't matter if gear selector is in
park or neutral the bugger won't kick over. We suspect it is one of the kill switches either on the shift lever or the gearbox (guessing there are two of them but don't know). Question is - has anyone experienced a similar problem if so what did you do to fix it? Also can anyone enlighten us as to the location of the switches?
Thanks
Pete

Does it have a thrid party alarm or imboliser fitted? If so, I'd start there as they are very often thrown into the car in the most dodgy of ways causing both starting problems and random cut outs while driving. I've seen this a number of times on several different vehicles.

No worries, check your engine's earth straps are making good contact and that the battery terminals and conectors are clean and true. Take them off and clean them and spray some CRC over them. Check the connections to the starter motor too. It would be rare (I would have thought anyway) that both the neutral and
park sitches would fail at the same time... But then again I don't know a great deal about the 80's specifically.

HI, Is it starting when you apply a live wire to the starter motor solanoid,if yes this will determine that it is your inhibitor switch faulty,if no it is a starter problem.Very easy to determine if I am on the job,But a bit harder here.Better see a auto elec???

Seems we might be on to something here - just gave the solenoid a few sharp taps and hey presto ...the bloody thing started. Here's hoping. Thanks everyone.

I replaced my starter last week after having similar pronblems. First I replaced the solenoid but then the starter still played up. So I bought a generic starter motor at a reasonable price. Now I am stuck with a new solenoid but will have the old starter done up sooner or later and have it as a spare. I will probably have to wait another 200,000km afore it goes lol

G-day Patrol22,
My 80 series is diesel so don't know if the solonoids are the same but when
mine was playing up I disembled it to have a look & the contacts were quite pitted.
I figured i'd have to get new contacts but as it was the weekend I cleaned the old ones with a file & put them back -- haven't had any problems since (18 months ago)

Thanks again everyone - will remove and replace cables and check out the solenoid before looking at the cutout switches.
Cheers
Pete
