Hi everyone,
What the best way to go re fuel tanks for a diesel 4Runner. The original is 65L I think. Is it better to get a long range
tank and replace the old one, or source an auxilary
tank or a similar second
tank and fit it to the opposite side as suggested in one of the 4WD monthly mags.? This apparently requires exhaust mods.
Also ideas on where to get such a tank/tanks at a reasonable price? 4wd Systems are asking between 600-700 for a 113 litre
tank.

Close your eyes open the wallet bite the bullet and get a replacement
tank by outback or someone then all the buggering about has been done.
A good product is woth the price and it sure helps with long distances. So don't be so tight. A set of tyres cost more and only last a couple of years but the
tank will last to you get rid of the vehicle.

Long Range tanks may be a good idea to some but I have over the years seen travellers with lots of problems with them especially with venting, fuel supply and not getting the right amount of fuel through to the othe
tank etc. You have to choose
well and make sure that the persons who fit the
tank do a good job. Factory LR tanks are another story and normaslly work
well. Having had two LR tanks fitted over the years I have shied away from them.
The old archiac method of carrying steel jerry cans works for me. I have set my wagon up to carry up to eight jerries if needed to compliment the 95litre standard diesel
tank. Carried too much fuel on my last trip though(6 jerries) and will now look at only carrying 4 jerries, depending on the distances involved.
4 jerries of good quality will set you back $200.

4WD Sytems are a good
tank, have one in the Surf. Not sure but I think any long range
tank (replacing original) will require mods to the exhaust system. 4WDSystems (and others) also have aux tanks to fit under the rear. Usually more expensive coz it's a "new" system not replacing/using original lines/sender etc.
For more ideas checkout the techsite (body mods) at Toyota Surf or even join up;

Otherwise the cheapest wayout is jerry's as previously suggested.

Hi Snow,
It's a 1995 model. I spoke to someone at one of the 4wd shops before I got your reply and they said they though a LR
tank was not able to be fitted to my model? only a 60 ltr auxilary. I will go back to them and ask re the longranger. What price? reply to rezarf@dodo.com.au
Cheers
Kev
