Thank god its friday.

Anyway hi all, I went and grabbed my IPAQ last night out of the Jack, as i recently got wireless broadband at home, what a drama that was, another story.., anyway was going to configure it, the IPAQ, on my wireless Broadband, but i turn it on and it starts the whole setup screen and once its on, i have lost my programs i have installed (Destinator and Oziexplorer). Quich check and everything on the storage card is still there, phew.. Its is only a few months old, sits in a powered cradle in the Jack. I have heard of these things loosing things when the battery goes flat, have my set to turn off in 3 mins if not being used

Anyone got any ideas why i lost things......

It hasn't gone and created a new profile? Ie modified the original so that all your original settings are then when it's docked or on wireless and then when its un-docked, created a new profile, that isn't showing the installed applications? I haven't played with PDA's too much, but this is something that came to mind.

Hi Crazie,
If you find the answer let me know. We use the &*&#@ things as data loggers for work. I allways make sure that they are working from pgms on the card and all data is saved to the card.
I don't know how many times we have turned them on , only to get the set up screen. It's now second nature to just look for the data on the sd card.
Not much help I know, But.

Adam,

One thing to check is that if you are running Oziexplorer, it's got
a "Keep Alive" setting which emulates the user input every few
seconds, so that the Pocket PC won't got to sleep...

If you got this feature turned on (my pocket PC does) then
this could be the reason your battery got flat... Although my IPAQ
is smart enough to switch off anyway before everything is lost...

Hi Stan

Yes my IPAQ is hard wired in the 4WD, and yes it turns itself off when not in use and also has a backup battery. This thing cost $1300, think it is smart enough, that is why i am a little lost... lol

I have been caught out this way a few times - I un-check all the power saving settings (this is manual in the Axim) so that it doesn't dim when using Ozi and then forget to put them back on.

Adam,

Have you tried a soft reset to see if you can just re-boot it? Very strange that just installing / setting up a profile would ditch other programs. Good luck with it.

.... and where are the piccies from the snow trip???

sorry...also meant to add - I have only lost everything off my Axim once - accidently did a hard reset while mucking around with it - was a struggle to remember how I had OziCE set up but got it back on ok. Like you - had all the maps and CE track files on the 1 gig SD card.

Hi,

The iPaq 4700 actually doesn't have a backup battery per se.... It is a very small rechargeable and I find that if you remove the main battery (or it goes flat) the backup battery can maintain the contents of the iPaq for about 5-10 minutes. It is really only there so you can change the main battery without losing everything.

Crazie,
When you install programs, they install to memory (or RAM) by default. When the IPAQ loses power, memory is cleared. Sometimes the IPAQ will do a 'hard' boot (or 'cold' start if you prefer) for unexplained reasons. This too will cause loss of programs stored in memory.
RAM requires a constant power supply to prevent data loss.
The trick is to not accept the default RAM location for the install. Change it to be the 'file store' or one of the storage cards. These are non-volatile storage options.

Hope this helps!
regards,
Scrubba

Hi,
I guess Dave answered that for you below.
Mine is installed on the IPAQ's FileStore with maps and data located on the SD card. Didn't have sound prompts till I moved all the OziExplorer wave files into the data directory on the SD card as well. Took a little while to work out.

Unfortunately the earier devices did this for no explainable reason.

Ozi has some issues for installed direct to the storage card (but seems Ok if you move it over after install and adjust the appropriate parameters).

I keep IPAQ (& GPS) constantly powered. This eliminates the 'missing program' issue that would otherwise occur if the power is off for a few weeks.

One of our customers also had the same issue for the application we wrote for them when people come pack from a few weeks holiday.

The simple answer is to keep it powered up, and switched off when not in use.

G'day Ads,

these things are notorious for that. Don't beat yourself up for an answer, it went flat. Simple as that. I used to use an iPaq 3630 that would do it if I didn't cradle it daily. Now use an iMate that is better with battery management, but still had to totally re-install a few times.

New version of Windows PocketPC 2005 is supposed to support better memory management and storage. That doesn't help you but :)

Just do your best to keep it powered.

Cheers,

Jason.

I have a HP 2110 iPAQ, it came with a backup program on it called iPAQ Backup from sprite Software www.spritesoftware.com
I have it set to back up each day onto a cf card.
I,v had to use it twice to restore all added programs and files
it also will backup to the ActiveSync on the laptop
so fare it has worked fine
