I haven't been to Supercheap for a while and popped in there today.

I spied an 8 amp power supply for $70. Bought it immediately.

It's very small compared to traditional power supplies. I then had a look at my power supply for my fliptop which is rated at 65 watts which is smaller than a packet of smokes. The 8 amp pack actually has a fan inside it to keep it cool.

I've had it running my 80L Waeco for the last 5 hours and so far, so good.

If it continues to perform it is a much better option than the Waeco unit at around $140. If it dies, so be it, Supercheap's return policy is faultless.

I'll be in there tomorrow. I have the 5amp mobitronics one for the 30l waeco but it gets bit warm when running the 45L explorer on a hot day so an 8amp bump with fan is a good deal for that price.

I was recently looking for a power supply, the small variable voltage thingys (to power the GPS while @ home) and I saw one model that was rated at 5amp or some thing! Yeah right 5 amp @ 3volts. Marketing bullshot :( It was only good for 1 amp @ 12volt).
Is your 8amp rated for 12volt, is it 12volt only or variable.
It sounds good though, it's fan cooled too!
Very small? like a pack of matches? smokes? 240l wheelie bin?

It is 12 volt only. Rated 8 amps at 12 volts. It's definitely putting out the power because in the past when I've tried a 5 amp unit on the Waeco, the "error" light flashes.

Measures 150 mm x 60 mm x 43 mm.

Still going strong this morning and is completely cool to touch.

Jimbo,
Sorry, bloody laptop mouse pads.
The power supply is a switchmode power supply. These have been around for a few years now and dont have the old heavy transformers. In my work we would use 12 volt power supplies rated 15 amp that were bigger than a shoe box and took two hands to lift them. The 15 amp switchmodes fit in your hand. Switchmode means its electronic instead of electrical, and if you remember the old ceiling fan controllers compared to the new ones, its the same principle. They are very reliable, but just give them ventilation because if you dont it will blow if its got a heavy load and possibly double or triple the output voltage which wont help the fridge.

Be care ful with Supercheap products. They seem to think insulation on there products is an accessory. My tyre pump had no insulation on the 12 leads internally and they rejected this as a manufacturing fault.

Pete,

Thanks for the explanation. I couldn't understand how an 8 amp power supply could be so small. Are they reliable?

I've been using them on fliptops for years and have never had one fail. I didn't know they were "switchmode", not that I understand the technololgy.

Of course if it does fail, I'll take it back to S/C for a refund.

I don't know what Redeye's experience has been, but I've always found them to be very supportive of their products (I'm onto my third rechargeable spotlight, as they fail I take them back. It's got to be 2 years since I bought the first and they still keep replacing them without an issue).

Cheers,

Jim

I was quoted $140 from the fridgeshop last November.

When I got my 80 from them the freebie was a 15L cooler which my wife uses at work as a fridge. So it's not entirely wasted.

Still, $70 for the litttle 8 amp job from S/C seems OK and it is running like a dream.

Cheers,

Jim.

Jimbo,
The switchmodes are pretty reliable, but would unplug it during a storm. The ratings on good quality supplies are the true constant load rating, ie they can handle full 8 amps continuosly and can go to something like 150-200% for a short while. The one you have may only be rated at 5amps continuos. I just noted you state the supply is 8amp 65 watt. 65 Watts is 5.5amps. 8amps is 96 watts. ( power = current x volts ).
We use industrial high grade power supplies at work. A top of the line true 8 amp continuos load supply from the is around $170. Check out the powerbox web site as they have hundreds of supplies.

Pete,

The 65 watts I was referring to was on the fliptop computer power supply, not the one for the fridge.

The fridge power supply is clearly marked 12VDC, 8A.

Cheers,

Jim.

does this thing do the job of say, a Thumper (Fridge shop) but in a much smaller package? Went into supercheap today and the bloke didn't know what I was on about. Nor did I, come to think of it. I merely asked for a 8 amp power supply @$70 told him it was approx fag packet size. Presumably their own brand?

Steve,

It's not a portable power supply like the thumper. It a 240 to 12 volt power supply for running the fridge at home or at a van park when 240 is available.

It's a Pure-Smartpower, Adapter LP-1280.

Cheers,

Jim.
