A large company who specialises in supplying products to the defence forces recently put out a specification for a medium qty of air compressors to be supplied and installed to 4wd's and i assume landrovers, but are they really a 4wd?.
Any way the compressor specified by them was one from ARB which normally retails for around $200....if its good enough for them i might get one....not sure of model etc but i am going to ask relative who has the contract .

Hi Nudey
Spend the little extra mate and get the bushmaster or bushranger what ever it is called (4wd is off getting serviced and the compressor is in the back), kicks the ARB one. Everyone we have go out with is amazed how quick it inflates tyres.
Member Eric is a good contact for these pumps, I have brought a few off him for me and my family.

Crazie,
I'll second that, and it's the Bushranger Max Air, not cheap but it works. There are cheaper copies of the MaxAir around depends how you do your maths and the chances of the cheaper one breaking are greater and and this will more than likely happen at the most in opportune time.

We also sell another compressor, made by company that makes Maxair, but it is twice as fast [timed it] and bigger, and only $40 more to buy.
And BTW, when we tested the Big W unit vs maxair, and others, looks same, similarity stops there, internals of the big W unit, inc the elec motor are no where near the same manufacture, or quality.

"we" would be my user name, if you type that in your browser,
and the results of the test, maxair twice as fast as arb 0-30psi in a 31x10.5 and "thumper" twice as fast as bushranger same tyre, same time, same battery, same vehicle idling.

Craize,
Will the Max Air re-
seat a tubless tyre back on the rim again.
I have not used one of these compresors, but would like to know if you have take a tyre off the rim and using the air from the compressor reseat the bead of the tyre again.
Pumping a tyre up most 12v compressors will do but the test is reseating the bead.
I am not knocking the Max Air just want to know how it goes.

Crazie / Wayne,
To be honest I've rolled a few tyres and had to pump them up at the road side, I haven't been able to re
seat a bead when the tyre is flat and sitting on the road. If I jack the wheel up a bit to take some of the weight off the tyre, yes I've been able to inflate the tyre easily, the Max Air compressor didn't need as much weight taking off the rim as another brand mentioned here. What I do now is attatch the air compressor and start operating the jack, as soon as the bead seals I stop jacking obviously and take the weight off the jack.
If there is any puddles around I submerge the tyre as best as possible to make sure I have a good seal, usually I don't and have to take the tyre off for cleaning, oh the pleasures of alloys.

Just because the defence force is buying it doesn't mean it is any good(not dismissing the ARB unit as I think they are adequate for most). Quite often they will do trials and ask the guys on the ground what they think is best, then buy what the guys in the office liked the look of in the first place.

Nudie,
I have always used ARB because they are goodf and reliable and I was selling them at the time. Now I am out of the business as such I thought I would try Bushranger Max - Air after reading a report. Wow what a difference for pumping tyres. Alkso has a 5 year warranty and ARB own Bushranger now so you can't go wrong.

Hi guys, one other compressor you should have a look at before you spend $390 on the bushranger MAX, is at BIG W. I am not going to start an email war, but they have one that I, and three other mates, paid about $70 for and it works great. Before you all start the abuse, check it out because if it didnt come off the same assembly line as the Bushranger, it is an incredible copy, both in looks and operation. Saving $320 makes this compressor worth a try.

Ditto here. I bought one from Big W about 6-8 months ago after reading a thread on EO. I am most impressed with the unit and it sure looks like a clone of the Bushranger to me but its
well under $100.

There's photos floating around the web somewhere of the Max Air versus the Big W clone stripped down - they're not the same compressor, and the Big W quality is not up to scratch. The Big W compressor was showing some serious internal wear after only a few uses, the Max Air looked new.

If its the writeup I'm thinking of , then I think there was a little "but" in there.
For someone who uses the compressor only a couple of times a year , then Yes , they would probably be good value. If you are someone who regularily goes offroad , then Yes , the Bushranger would be a better investment.
I have a supercheap compressor , that I have had for nearly 3 years , still goes like a charm , but ,
mine only gets used a couple of times a year.

mine up on Friday. Rays Outdoors in Vic had their sale 27.5 % discount. Cost me $282.
Taylors Lake Store will have their sale this Friday coming up.

Hi Nudie,
I got the Bushranger Pro-Air. It is the mid range one below the Max-Air and for the amount of use it gets it does me great.
Takes up less space but is still damn quick and looks to be good quality.

I had a pretty ordinary experience with my ARB Compressor and wouldn't buy another one. Although to be fair ARB paid for my replacement one.
As a side note ARB's national warranty is a bit misleading - I had to buy another one from the
Alice Springs ARB dealer and take my old one back to my local dealer for a refund.
