Planning our next trip for coming October school holidays. We're from
Adelaide and looking at an SA deserts experience.
EO Treknotes say October latest time to do the Simpson, Googs etc. Has anyone done trips to these areas at this time? What was it like for families? Interested in driving condtiions also.
Only thing I have heard is Googs is thick with flies after August.
Thanks
JD

We did the Great Vic Desert last week in October last year, and enjoyed it. Had one hot day where it was 38 degrees, rest were about 30ish. Not as many flies out there because its not grazed. Will do it again this year.
Simpson desert and
Innamincka can be full of flies as it warms up.
As usual, need to be totally self-sufficient - not as many people out there as in the middle of the year. We like to take lots of
water.
Cheers
Phil

Forget the flies - no good plannning with them in the equation - they can be good and bad due to variable conditions in the outback - fair to say they are mainly bad, evrywhere, in the warmer months. October, like any other month is a gamble, but its on the shoulder - things could be warming up then, but hey..... the summer might start a bit late !

We've been across the SD twice, both in Oct. In 98 had several days in a row of 46 degrees, too bloody hot. In 2001 hottest day was 35 and had cool mornings. Be prepared for possibly very hot weather.
