Late July I posted a query re getting GPS map coordinates for places in Aus via the Net. I received a number of replies which were very useful and I really appreciate the time folks took to answer.

One asked my purpose for these co-ordinates- I am actually a cyclist not a 4WDer!! Interestingly one answer referred to Google Earth- I opened an Audax (long distance endurance cycling) email this morn- as well as the usual info associated with a ride was a screen pic from Google Eth showing a broad view of the countryside. I was intrigued.

One prob unique to cyclists is terrain- steep climbs sort out strong from the weak and accomodating terrain is a major part of planning rides- steeper and longer the climb shorter the distance for the day. Checked out Google Earth for ride currently being planned- took series of screen prints- now got a topo map of sorts- at least have some idea of vertical nature of the country we are crossing.

Always something new!!
Thanks again for help and cheers.

Dave,

Just wondering if you had any success finding a list of coordinates for Australian towns after your earlier post. Since reading that post, I have done some searching and have generated a waypoint file based on data available here. Unfortunately the Australian file available here has in excess of 66,000 names in it and is not in Oziexplorer format. Extracting only the 'popluated place' names reduced the list to about 9,500 and I have converted these into an Oziexplorer waypoint file. I can email you a copy of the file if you are interested.
