Hi All
I have a 1998 Hilux LN165R 5L diesel. The tacho does not work and I have been unable to find out from toyota where the sender is so I can check it, has anyone got any ideas?

i have a diesel navara with the same problem, i took out the sender which is a magnet in the engine block on the front, behind the fan belt. My multimeter did not pick up any signal form the sender, a new one is $485 from nissan (rip off merchants) and i tried to send a low voltage to the tach to get it to go but just blew a fuse - do you know how these this system actually works??

JJ, can only give you a hand `in general' not overly familiar with the Yoda motor in particular.
Most non-electronic diesels rely on a pulse generator of some sort to count the revs. Either in the fuel injectio pump or at the front of the block as mentiioned. I know my Isuzu has its in the FIP, just a magnetic pickup that counts the revs of the FIP so I assume there are two magnets so one revolution of the FIP will give the two pulses the tacho needs to signal the two revolutions of the engine.
I dont think you could supply any amounts of voltage to test the guage, but maybe once you locate the sender, an analogue multimeter might be able to signal whether the sender is pulsing while the engine is running! Process of elimination!
I do know my is sticking somehow...its does jump and drop 500 revs occasionaly, very obvious and not worth me ripping everything apart at the moment!!
Goodluck with it!
Matt.

Thanks Mat
the magnet in the FIP is looking like the answer, taking car to an auto elec. tomorrow to test the pulse.
Thanks for the response and will let all know when I find the answer.
