The engine exchange
shop didn't want to know me unless I was exchanging like for like. So if any kind sole who has upgraded a motor on an old vehicle can point me in the right direction I'd be chuffed. I want to put a bigger motor in my L300 to get more power perhaps get 15" or 16"
wheels.
Would I have to buy a engine from a wreckers privately then get it rebuilt and fitted? I am in
Brisbane and would welcome any supplier & mechanical reccomendations

sorry im in melb so i cant help you but we just did the same thing you want to do we never had a problem with the diferent size motor try a few other engine supliers im sure you should have some luck.
if you do go the other option the 4g63 2.6 are a cheap and easy motor to rebuild.
cheers and good luck

Dunno if new 2.6's are still avail, but a few years ago, a friend just dropped a new long motor in his Mitsi ute. Was considerably less than 2g's at trade prices.

I can remember reading about 2.6 conversions to L300 4x4s in the mid 80s - I understand that putting the engine in was relatively straight forward but there were overheating problems that could not be easily addressed. I think the L300 4x4 was basically a pajero with the van body dropped onto the chassis - but due to the overheating problem the 2.6 was not fitted. The L300 4x4 was already a bit top heavy so bigger
wheels will make this worse - they will also be illegal unless low profile tyres are fitted.

There are quite number of issues fitting an
Astron 2.6 engine to a L300 4x4
There was a bloke up in
Darwin in mid 1980's who developed a special kit for the L300 but for the life of me I cannot remember his name or the name of the kit. He eventually sold his kit to a fella in
Melbourne who carried on with the business.
The kit entailed fitting body mounts for a lift so that when the 2.6lt engine went in the sump would clear the
suspension mechanicals. Others made modifications to the sump. Then bigger
wheels were fitted to the L300 making it look like a Bigfoot and almost needing a small ladder to climb in to the cabin.
As recently as last week a mate of
mine tried to fit a 2.6 to a 2wd L300 and this would also have entailed fitting another gearbox. There was also the issue of getting the engine in to position. The bloke he was doing the job for then gave up on the idea and had a 1600 engine fitted instead.
The raised L300 4x4 was never a success as crosswinds would affect its driveability and offroad it wasn't all that good either.
Go to Google and have a look at the L300 Mitsubishi
Forum, maybe they can offer you better advice.

Cheers Guys, I may have to look into a 4G64 as it seems less likely to cause problems
