We were away
camping on the weekend and went to cut some wood. My little chainsaw was really struggling, so when we got back I decided to sharpen it. There I am, sharpening away, with a file, according to the instructions in the manual. A bloke I had been talikng to earlier wanders over to see what I am doing.
"Just sharpening the chainsaw, but I'm not much good at it" I say.
"No you're not" he replies, "Do you want me to sharpen it?"
"Sure" I respond.
He then takes me over to his Cruiser and gets out a 12 volt sharpener with a spinning carborundum tip and proceeds to sharpen my saw.
"Would you like a beer?" I offer.
"Try it first" is his reply.
Well, it was spitting out chunks like it used to when new. Went through the logs like a hot knife through butter.
We enjoyed a couple of beers and a yarn.
This week I will buy one of those little sharpeners and already know how to use it.
Struth, you can learn a lot in the bush.
Jim.

Nice tale Jim. While you're around mate, can you give us the post no. of your solar setup and usage. I'm sure you don't want to go thru it all again, but I'm interested in what you get from it. I've just bought a 2nd hand 80w. thought you said you had a 65w, so I'm hoping I'll do OK with
mine.

Steve,
See posts 18636, 18685, 18698, 18737,18692, 19039.
Lots of good information.
Beware of anything you read from "David Au". He is a Solar panel dealer who appeared on this
forum under many different alias's and has been banned more times than you've had a hot feed.
Cheers,
Jim.

Be careful ... if you can't sharpen one with a file, you won't do any better with a 12 volt sharpener, (you'll just bugger the chain quicker), you still have to know the correct angles & when to file the depth gauge/rakers.

Nudie,
It's a red thing that fits into the palm of your hand. It has a guide on it so you sharpen at the right angle. I've been quoted $55 from a chainsaw/mower
shop. I'm going to take my saw in to make sure I get the right sized tip and get them to show me how to use it.
As Shaker has suggested, I'll get them to show me how to to the rakers as
well.
Cheers,
Jim.

Been using one for years, I probably replace the bit every 20 sharpenings as they eventually wear down. Very easy to use, as the metal guide shows the angle required. Different sized bits for different sized chains. Only takes about five minutes to sharpen my large saw.

Jim,
thanks for those links (the last 2 led to other topics, though) and more to the point, thanks for taking the trouble of sharing your findings with us. I'm sure some of us duffers will benefit along with the experts who may even be surprised at some of the results. Wasn't aware you'd done the experiment. I just remember you saying you'd got a 64w panel with an agm battery. That sure gives food for thought. Thanks again matey.

Jimbo,
how often do you sharpen your chainsaw ?
I do 4 or 5 sweeps with a file every second tank full while cutting in the bush, and I refill the chain lube and
check the tension of the chain at the same time.
I sit the blade in a small vice thing hammered into a large log, takes only about five minutes, and you need a break every now and then so it's good for that also.
I find with only a few swipes of the file you are never cutting with a blunt saw and you can power through anything you choose with reletive ease.
Secret is look at the chips coming from the saw, when they get fine sharpen the blade.

Jimbo,
I've found "files ain't files" there are a few good brands and there are also some absolute crap out there also and the elcheapo handles are not assisting the workings of a decent file.
