My wife and I are planning a caravan trip around Australia with an 16 - 18 ft caravan which I have not bought yet. Can anyone comment on the suitability of the Ford Explorer as a suitable towing vehicle and also any information on how economical they are

Mate a great tow vehicle, we had one and i can say it will tow just about anything and with ease as for economy probably around the 14 to 20l/100ks depending on how heavy your foot is ;-) one thing about the Explorer, it has power to burn.
If you sit on 90 to 100kph you should get good economy.

I will second that, these things had towing in their design, they have a nice big transmission cooler and also a power steering fluid cooler and they have plenty of power.
What modal /Year are you looking to buy.
