Just a quick query.

We have an 88 Pajero (TDi, imported, lovely car). There is a bit of oil leaking from round the sump, and a tiny bit from round the turbo seals.

We got a quote of $1500 to fix both, as the seals are apparantly some special graphite thing costing around $1000. Thats $1000 just for 2 seals!

Is this right? I mean, it is just the seals that need replacing. The turbo is probably due for a tune, and a bearing replacement, seeing as it is 18 years old, but that would cost extra.
Cheers,

Chump

I've done that - you tend to get a better and faster answer here.

Usually.

Ive got a 94 TD Triton with the 4D56 engine. The oil leak around the turbo I wouldnt worry about if its only a little seep. If it gets noisy then star to look into it. Make sure you keep the oil changes at 5000km and filter 10,000. Is the oil leak from the sump or somewhere else. Try tightening the bolts on the sump guard as Ihave have seen this fix leaks on other cars. I have a leak around the air conditioner compressor. Its been there for 5 or 6 years now without any problems I did look at getting it fixed but all the mechanics said dont waste a heap of money ( including tranfering to the new ozone safe gas ) fixing it if it still works fine.

Thanks for that - I think the dude was looking for a reason not to buy the car. The air-con works fine, engin sounds great and has more than enough power.

Funnily enough, I couldn't find a single spot of rust, even though the idiot was telling me how the NRMA report said it was all over the floorpan.

Oh well, we might just end up keeping it in the end. It is a good little car!
