Hello out there
The father in law has a set-up for his kayak which consists of three roof bars with the front two having the kayak cradles and the rear one has a roller on it (a section of pipe with bearings on the inside). I know he had this custom made. He uses this to lay one end of the kayak on then just roll it forward onto the cradles. Does anyone know of roof rack manufacturers that supply a bar like this or is custom the only answer?
Thanks, Brian

I just typed 'kayak roof racks' into Google. There seems to be no shortage of suppliers, including major manufacturers like Thule.

Yeah, I've checked lots of websites. It's the rear bar with a roller that I'm interested in and can't find any info on. I know that there are side loaders for boats/canoes but these are expensive. A roller on the rear bar seems a cheap and easy idea/design yet it may be a case of a non-mass produced item which will need to be custom made

I had the same issue with a Kayak. Go to any supplier that sells Rhino Racks. They have all the gear necessary as standard of the shelf product.

Sounds like a great idea - I have a problem lifting my kayaks on to the cradles on the roof of my lifted 4by. You've got me thinking about adapting the roller stand that came with my little fold-up work bench from Bunnings for $24.99. It's designed to rest the other end of whatever you are working on. Its a chrome roller, about 40cm wide and about 50mm diameter. If I could attach it in some way to a third roof rack at the rear it would do exactly what you are talking about. Have a look at them.

I use either a kayak stacker (if I'm carrying more than 2) or Rhino Sportz (cradle type) Carriers. A couple of blokes I know use those tradesman's roller racks. I think they're used to load ladders. Seen plenty of them around and keep thinking "must get a pair of those sometime" but still haven't. Can't be diffficult to find.

I have a commercial roof rack with a roller accross the full width at hte back.
Came off an old Telstra van. Find the wrecker who has the vans and you could
well find the roof rack.
