My Prado, 125000 km, intermittently (eg once every three days) refuses to change down from fourth to third either in response to driving conditions or via accelarator kickdown. The problem usually clears when the vehicle is brought to a standstill and always when the engine is switched off. Problem occurs only when engine hot. No fault codes are generated or dash lights activated. Also, every so often the transmission goes clunk/shudder at around 85 kph on level road in fourth, feels like you have run over something, scary behaviour. This is driving me nuts as no-one can find anything wrong.

Anyone heard of a similar problem?

I had exactly the same problem last May. members from this forum helped point me in the right direction.

When my car wanted to kick back all I got was a thump and the car stayed in top.
After 7 weeks of frustration I finally found a mechanic who knew what he was about. Im no mechanic and can only repeat what I was told. So here it is - I hope it helps -

In my case it was the auto centering device fitted to the throttle. It is supposed to tell the computer when it is ok for the gearbox to kick back down a gear. When it is playing up the box tries to change but the computer stops it. ????????????????

Hi Grant,

Had a reply from another forum, http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/90series/
also a throttle position sensor problem. To fix it, they just sprayed it with CRC. What did you do?

I was told that the unit was stuffed and replaced - but as I had an extended warranty they paid for it and I got no invoice. A part was ordered in though.

As a matter of interest I see you are Qld. Brisbane? If so may be worth letting Sci Feet have a look.

After 7 weeks going nowhere Tojo Aust arranged for me to take it to SciFleet at Newstead - where they claimed the foreman is their best troubleshooter in Qld. Spoke to their head honcho and described the symptoms when I booked the car in. Arrived following day to meet him and leave car. He had the replacement part in already and the car fixed and test driven in 2 hrs flat. When I asked why so quick to fix after the 7 week marathon his words were its so bloody obvious whats been the problem? They took out the unit tested it fixed it and drove it 100k. I kid you not.
