I am doing a crossing of the
Simpson Desert in Sept and am tracking the
Hay River from Poepells Corner to the
Plenty Highway. Was wondering if anyone had done that crossing before and if you had any interesting info or experiences.
thanks BillM

You must have a permit to do this trip.
We did it last April and at times the track can't be seen so be very carefull and make sure you have a GPS with the required co-ordinates. Also DO NOT go alone as the dunes can be difficult at times.
It is a great trip for the avid 4wd person.
There is no fuel from
Birdsville to Tobermorey.
There is plenty of interesting things to see as you go.
This trek is not for the inexperienced or those who have not done their trip prep carefully.

Yeah,Great trip.
But fuel is always available at Jervois at the top end of the
Hay River on the Plenty Hwy.

Did the
Hay River run last month, but we came from the north.
I'd guess that you know that you need to arrange all the permissions etc thru Jol Fleming
http://www.direct4wd.com.au/
That site has a lot of info that you require. Jol will email you all the waypoints you need.
Heading north from Poeppels is an easy run to Beachcomber Oil
well, then you pick up a
shotline east, then head up the
Hay River. Theres nothingtoo difficult if the weather's dry.
Lake Caroline had
water in it last month, but may be dry again by now.
And do the bushtucker tour with Lindsay Bookie. He's a great guy, ran a fantastic tour for our group, and needs our support.
Anything else, just ask.
Cheers
Phil

We did south to north afew days after Phil, and drove the actual river bed, not the track beside it, and we cut cross country after heading out to
camp 14 on the mdigan line bqack to the
hay river, and also circum navigated
Lake Caroline while it had
water in it, the southern end has some great
camping spots, and around the nothern end also worth a look.
Lindsay Bookies
camp is also
well worth the effort, along with his bush tucker tour.
The trip is pretty easy for the experienced, and the tope end of
the desert beats the Qaa and french line down, hands down IMHO.
