Only 8 sleeps before we head from Bundaberg across to Boulia to start out Central Australia Trip. Would appreciate any recent reports on Plenty/Donahue Hwys and East MacDonnell Ranges where we start our holiday proper.

3 weeks ago that track was fairly cut up because of the rains. There were roadworks just across the NT border and the worst section was around Jarvois. Even doing a tyre in 70k from Alice, I still managed to do it in one verrry long day. A mob that came two days behind me did it in 2, camping around Jarvois. Ring the local constabulary in Boulia to get the latest.

We came across from Alice two weeks ago and it was fine. Check at the Info centre in Boulia. They have good coffee!

Thanks Peter. We are hoping to sit on around 60-80km/h, conditions allowing of course. We are towing an off road camper and will be travelling in the company of two other vehicles also towing camper trailers. Had they been working on the road at all? Heard that there was some work on the NT side (plenty).

Yes there is about 50k of excellent work close to the border. Should be ok for most of the road at that speed. Have agreat trip. Take a look at Ruby gap if you have time.

We did Alice to Tobermorey and then Tobermorey to Boulia 2 weeks ago also. Condsidering the horror stories we had heard it was very good. Normal care and an eye on speed made it easy. Have a good one. The info centre in Boulia has a file it keeps filled in by travellers just completing it... its just inside the door.

cheers

Thanks JohnN

We were out that way last June including 4 days at Diamantina Lakes. Found the folk in the centre very obliging as well. Looking forward to a break and some great scenery (and a few camp oven cooked meals with a few nice reds!).

Just got back from same trip !! ..no dramas except for the bastard? who passed us as we were on 80 kph ...with a Ford 250 Diesel Twin Cab and camper trailer who sprayed us with stones and chipped my screen ..going hell for leather...his mate followed in A Navara 4x4 withh similar trailer...but a lot slower !!!

The road is in good nick ..but you may fall upon an odd patch that needs a bit of consideration....drive it easy and u will ahve no problems..!!!...if that's what u want ??

Steve

Thanks for the info. We have always found that you can get to/through most places with a bit of consideration, appropriate speed and some planning. I think you also get to see/appreciate a bit more of the wonderful countryside at 80kph than you do at 110kph.

Cheers
