No chains needed for 4-wheel and all-wheel drive day visitors on Mt Buller
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The State Government recently gazetted an amendment in March 2005, to the Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations 1998, to permit the Alpine Resort Management Board to waive the carrying of wheel chains on certain days.
Following a period of consultation with stakeholders and regulatory authorities, the
Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board has determined that 4-wheel drive day visitors will generally be permitted to enter the Resort without chains as far as the day car parks at the skating rink, which is just 1.5 km below the Mt Buller Village.
This change to wheel chain regulations for 4-wheel drive vehicles on Mt Buller applies to day visitors only.
The Board may from time to time declare that due to weather and/or road conditions on particular days, all vehicles will be required to carry chains.
At this stage there is NO CHANGE to policy in regards to the carrying of wheel chains for 2-wheel drive vehicles when entering the Mt Buller Alpine Resort.
Phil Nunn, acting CEO of Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Alpine Resort Management Board said that the Board believes this to be a positive move as it allows more people to access the Resort by removing some of the costs associated with visiting the alpine region and participating in snowsports.
“Whilst removing the obligation for 4-wheel drive vehicles to carry chains, the Board still recommends that all vehicles carry chains in case road conditions change unexpectedly,” adde
d Mr Nunn.
Will Generally be permitted........ I bet they would still fine you if you went up there without them. But in saying that, i have only be asked at the bottom
gate if i had them with me, never had to put them on or been asked to see them.
Interesting read Chris. It always amuses me at the perception people have that a 4x4 doesn't need to fit snow chains. On Ice it doesn't matter if its 2 or 4 wheel drive, if the rubber won't grip you can't control it. Ironically on my last trip up
Falls Creek 2WDs had to fit chains & 4WDs not, yet it was a couple of 4bys who had slid off the road covered in black ice. 5 minutes fitting chains would have saved $2000 at the panel beaters. I suppose they probably had a go at the Alpine resorts staff for not telling them to fit them ;-)
I suspect Mt Bullers change in policy is more to do with the change in the weather & the fact that it rarely snows much below the
carpark these days. As a kid going skiing I remember dad would always leave a shovell tied to the roof rack so when we came back to the car we could dig it out :-))
Cheers Craig............
