On my return from two weeks away visiting family and attending a school reunion I was inundated with emails - 380 to be precise, a lot of which concern this Post above. I have now read the Post. Thank you to everyone for their wonderful support, even those who don't know us, but special thanks to those who emailed me to let me know it had happened and to ask exactly what happened. I wouldn't normally reply to something like that but out of respect for those who have asked it was simply this.
I was directly involved in one incident only - the man told me he lurked on EO, was not a member but would be going on to the Forum to tell everyone how awful I was. He'd come out of the Desert with his poor family in the rain and couldnot and would not understand there was no dry space for a family in a tent and took considerable offence at the suggestion that sandhills around town were the driest spots - even though they could still shower here and have coffees etc. He is a very tall man, I won't mention the state he comes from or his numberplate - he is an angry man, a bully, his wife is quite down trodden and he allowed his young children to be witness to the tirade. I accused him of being a bully to women - and had Ian been here (he went out for the day) he wouldn't have carried on like that.
I am only sorry that he allowed his children to be there- I am also sorry that I lowered myself to his level. The incident is over and done with. I was very distressed by it and have thanked the people who came to my aid afterwards - they were witness to it and have spoken on the Forum. It is not often that I get extremely distressed in public - a measure of the level of stress felt by both Ian and I at the time. As it turns out the Hotel people were having similar problems with similar issues - as small business people in the same industry dealing with the same people we frequently, sometime daily, have de-briefing meetings - and we remind each other of the good times and nice people who travel and visit.
As for the other incident - Ian was involved with that - it was sorted by me and those people have been kind enough to comment (kindly) on the Forum.
I have absolutely no knowledge of anything to do with Overlander or the Forum - there were three vehicles here during the rain who were hoping to go to Camerons Corner for their gathering and a week or so after the gathering some other vehicles came through. I am unaware of anything untoward.
This is a public Forum but not the place for public slanging matches - and those who know me, know my feelings about things like that. A Forum is a place for the dissemination of knowledge and experience and the passing of relevant technical information. It is sad that out of 20,000 visitors each year there may be between 20 and 50 who rankle - but it is a very small percentage of lovely people who are excited to have finally found their dream of visiting the Desert or Birdsville and listening to their great adventures and experiences and hearing of their hopeful adventures. This is why we do what we do and why we are here - although working 24/7 for 9 months of the year, when you are tired and are asked for information and you give it and then people go out and do silly things, you do sometimes wonder why. If anyone would like a small business in an isolated area dealing with drought, floods, flies and people please apply now. Who was that wise man who said - I love mankind, it's people who are difficult. LOL.
Thank you to everyone for their views and the wonderful support of the 'family' - it makes a difference. Ruth Doyle.
To Becky, there is only one person who calls me Goddess - he's the only one who would dare.

Wow Ruth, I don't know you but certainly hope to meet someday, we have tried to get to Birdsville for three years but keep hittingthe area when it rains. Anyway, congratulation on the way you have conducted yourself here on the forum, no nasty words but still got your point across beautifully. I read that particular post and the followers you have would make anyone proud. I also agree children should not be subjected to public displays of aggression. Keep up the great work you do in making our 'great outback adventure' a memorable one. Cheers, michele

You deserve a medal for putting up with us and our various "demands".
Keep up the good work and we'll see you down here in a few months with any luck!!!

I read the posts every day on this forum and have gained great ideas from the info people put on this forum. I read that particular post as well and as another one who has never met Ruth, I have a mental picture of a great lady who is conducting a business in a remote part of Australia and from all I have ever heard doing a bloody good job.
I am going to the Birdsville Races this year and will be arriving on the Wednesday before and expect the Caravan Park to be full but will do my best to meet Ruth and say hello. I also realise it is the busiest time of the year and Ruth will be a very busy lady.
I will be in a Satin Green Terracan towing a Camp-O-Matic Camper Trailer and leaving Bathurst on Saturday 27th August and arriving Birdsville 31st August. Have my company name written all over my car but not looking for free advertising on this forum. You won't miss me (186cm, 140Kgs and a grey beard). Say Hi if you catch up along the road.
Once again Ruth, the post above just goes to show what a great person you must be. Keep up the good work.
Cheers

Ruth, well done for your restraint. It's indicative of your character and breeding.

We've never met but like many here I look forward to doing so one day.
On the lighter side, (its Friday after all:), perhaps I shouldn't of used words like breeding ....

Ruth I've never met you either, and it's a LONG flamin way to get there from here, but I do hope to get their one day. The "other side" of this storey was never really delved into in any great detail, but from what you're saying, I can't understand what more they would have expected.

Personally I like camping in the bush and to have the offer of the facilities (showers etc) as well seems like a generous gesture to me...

I used to manage a busy retail store and know what it's like dealing with angry people, some of them there is just no way to win. Sometimes it can really hurt you deeply in a way that makes you wonder what is happening to the human race. But as you say, you have to way that up against the good people you meet and remember that good people are still out there.

Your reposonse was written very well and with tact. Keep up the good work.

Good on you Ruth.
From someone who has spent 23 years in small business I sympathise and understand your problems.
Keep up the good work, As most of us in small business know these issues are thankfully in the minority and the vast majority of people are great to deal with and give us the continued personal incentive to keep going.

I look forward to meeting you one day.

Cheers

Now Im not taking sides here, and have only commented here because it has been bought up by others, but i can see how somebody may become upset while staying in the area after the last 2 groups of families i have taken to the park.

Great to see so many happy people here, with what Ruth has been doing, and after my first group i took to Birdsville in 2004, and the other group we met with, the way those people were treated, after doing me a favor by changing a gas bottle on the camp bbq, by ian, i must say, not Ruth, saw me have to ban ian from being able to talk to anyone in my group, unless it was through me, or Ruth, but unfortunately, they thought threats of violence against campers 2 and 3rd time around over the day about the same supposed incident, meant they didnt want to return, I thought anyone can have a bad day, and booked my group to stay again this year, but unfortunately, when our booking of 3 rooms saw 2 of them given to a tour operator when we arrived, and the supposed blame put on me, when the email spelled out we would tke the last 3 rooms available, as well as asking some of our group to pack up and move from the left side of the shop camping area, rather rather than let the 6 vehicles that came in camp with them, and one of our group was also called a "stupid bastard' by the people in the park shop, for parking out the front of the shop, with the group, to book in when they arrived. These 2 groups were very well recieved everywhere else we attended, and with both groups, the one place was the only issue we had on either trip.

As anyone knows who runs groups, these type of issues can make a group uneasy, and i was happy to take the next group there, and because we said nothing, and left, there was no issue between parties when we left, unlike, it would seem this other family, but in general, not neccasarily this incindent Ruth has eluded to, sometimes, it isnt always 'the other parties" fault things work out as they do.

Thanks Ruth,
we had plenty of green around, the start of flowers coming up, but I dare say the place is awash with them now.

I would recommend the Hay river to anyone for the best part of the desert to traverse, as good as the southern end is, the northen end is "different"

The more I travel around Oz the more I know you have to be flexible.

We had people in town (Broken Hill) during the recent rain almost demanding that the RTA open roads so they could go on their holiday. I know from experience that things don't always work out the way you have planned and this can be distressing.

I have stayed only 1/2 a night in your park Ruth. We came out of the desert later than we wanted too. The sunset from the top of Big Red was too beautiful to leave behind. Because of recent rains the road between town and BR was flooded and we got bogged, and lost and ..... it just took too long. We got to the Hotel to find they only had pies and sausage rolls left and that the rooms we thought we would get were being renovated. ( we had no booking 'cause we never imagined being that late.) So we went round to the campground. Wandered down in the dark and made camp as quietly as possible and went to bed.

We woke the next morning to find that we had not picked the best spot to make camp but as we were packing up felt it would not make much difference. We went up to the office to pay for our stay and were met with a warm friendly smile and an understanding laugh. It was what we needed really, well that and a good coffee.

What I'm saying Ruth is that from my limited experience you run a pretty good place and run it pretty well. Your facilities are better than many I have seen in much bigger places than Birdsville. When we were there they were clean and fully functional. A week earlier we were at Yulara. Broken dirty overcrouded, the park management didn't want to know about it and it was way more expensive than Birdsville. The way you treated my family and friends was great and the advice you gave us was accurate and presented in a friendly manner, even though it was not what we wanted to hear.

As for the people you had trouble with, I don't know I wasn't there. My job is all about helping people when they need it most and I have been abused by those I helped just for doing that so I never underestimate the potential of people to be unpleasant at any time.

I look forward to visiting you again sometime Ruth. If ever you ae in Broken Hill look me up. My coffee may not be as good as yours but I make a mean cup of tea.

Ruth,

We were the travellers (4 vehicles) that stayed in your park, and left a couple of days before the rain, headed toward Cameron Corner and the Overlander Forum gathering. Yes we did make it, but only just. Unsurprisingly, there were very few other people that did make it.

I thoroughly enjoyed my two nights in Birdsville and can't fault the service at any of the local businesses.

I have heard about the problems that occurred after the rain, and not being there I don't wish to pass judgement on any of it.

Hi Ruth and Ian,

So many good and not so good memories of the places my wife and I have been over the years and the people who live and conduct business in those far away small places. 99% of them, over some 25 or 30 years of treking around the world and across Australia, have been the most helpful and caring people.

I remember having stones hurled at the truck while crossing Iran, I remember the incident with the snake in the vehicle in India, I remember the American camp ground manager who refused us entry as we were "foreigners", I remember chasing Erics brolga down the road in Maree, I remember the Tanami crossing when it was merely a wheel rut track in most places, but most of all I remember the look of pride on Ians face the day after he had read the instruction book, yet again, for his brand new Cappuccino machine...the most expensive machine in all of Birdsville !! ok so it wasn't the best Cappoccino the first time, but they sure did imporve with practice.

The new and improved overnight sheds were just being installed, the dozer was clearing more space and there we were sitting in the Birdsville CP shop admiring Ruth as she handled people. The ones who insisted that as they were more important they should use the washing machine first and so Ruth should go tell them so. Ruth with that casual laid back style, in a minute..

I remember, a tour group turning up unannounced and beacuse they were doing the CP a favour by staying, they should get the level spots and so Ian should move the incumbents, if not, the group would not be there again.

Groups equal money and no small business likes to go without. But to his credit, Ian insisted that as the incumbents along the fence had been there since the day before, paid their money, were returning visitors then they stay..the group could find a flat spot out near the racecourse.

And yes, I remember so many of the things that make trekking a fun thing at times and a not so fun thing at other times...... but most of all.... I remember Ruth and Ian as the new owners and then later how they became Birdsville establishment and the improvements that have been made.

And you know what folks ? Ruth and Ian may have days when they wish that they were in Brisbane but they continue to manage one of the great CP's in outback Australia.

Ruth and Ian.. take a bow.. you are true representatives of the country smile, persistence and hospitality and when we arrive again next year, you wont know us as we are just another couple of tourists passing through but you will make us feel like we have friends in that part of the country.

Thank you Ruth and Ian
