Im in the process of building a trailer out of an old Nissan Patrol Ute ( Tray )
In QLD do I need to remove the rear diff or can I leave it " Free spinning" ?

Cheers,

JAG.

Hi Jag

I'd just remove the driveshafts (and the crown etc.) and have hub caps fabricated instead.

It is quite common to do this in other parts of the world. Basically cut the rear end off a ute, keep everything (chassis, tray, suspension and axle) as it is, add an A-frame and you're in business. Makes very solid trailers!

However I haven't seen this done in Australia. All trailers with an ute tray seem to have a manufactured trailer chassis and trailer springs, axle etc. Why I do not know. Can someone please enlighten me/us ;-)

Cheers
Ted

I was told that QLD transport does not class a diff as a trailer axel and won`t register a trailer with a diff for an axel.
but you still see plenty of them around.
better check with QLD transport

Hi JAG,
Was interested in your comments on running an alternator for charging on the trailer. I assume you meant fixing one up to the pinion running off a belt? Not such a bad idea at all really. Not hard to do either, Home made bracket, wiring and relays would work a treat. Why didnt i think of that. Ya got me thinkin now. Might experiment with that in time myself. Only down side i see, it would be having to carry the extra weight of a complete diff centre, but looking at it, I think the advantage of the setup is well worth the weight problem.

Great idea mate.
