We were just wondering which is the better option in a GQ, turbo diesel, diesel, or petrol. any ideas on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
Also, SWB or LWB?

S & N
what do you plan to use it for, towing, comp truck, daily comuter, tourer, camping.

I drive an 89 td42 (4.2 diesel) Lwb with a list of extras to suit my wants and needs, ie a reliable daily comuter, that has enough good gear on it to go where i want to go, touring, camping, etc etc.

i get roughly 12L/100km with the normal aspirated diesel, and is big enough to lug around all my gear to travel across the simpson etc.

these are all things to concider, (btw) a ford maverick is a nissan GQ only the badges and the price differ.

we will be using it as a weekender, for play, and for towing the camper trailer

I have both.

The turbo-diesel is getting me 12L/100km city/country average. The petrol gets me 18. Loaded up, the t/d stays at this average consumption while the petrol consumes more.

The t/d is generally better offroad (in my opinion) - especially in slow, steep descents. Torque comes on lower in the rev band and idling along tricky tracks is more comfortable and less stress on the clutch leg.

The t/d has been more reliable in river crossings and generally anywhere wet.

Servicing the petrol has been a heck of a lot cheaper.

we are definatly leaning towards the turbo diesel. we will be using it as a weekender, for play, and for towing the camper trailer. will be kitting it up with better suspension, winch etc

what about size? 3L or 4.2L? does the 4.2 come in TD?
we want a reliable truck for some fun hill climbs, water crossings, touring, etc...with enough power to tackle the lot!
i suppose fuel consumption isnt really a factor, will just get a long range tank!

Shannon,

In the GQ the 4.2 was naturally aspirated only, so any that you see with a turbo are after market jobs not that I have ever heard of this being a problem.

Later in the model life it came out with a 2.8L ( I think it was turboed) diesel six, which by most accounts, is an underpowered dog of a thing. Before anyone jumps on me, I said most, I know there are some who are happy with them.

Cheers,

Jim.

I should have clarified that mine is a 4.2 with a Dynamic Turbo Systems (DTS) aftermarket turbo installed at 110,000km. I've just ticked over 306,000 and narry a problem with the turbo or engine. Very reliable so far.

The GQ in diesel was only 2.8 WITH a factory turbo.... or 4.2 naturally aspirated. Aftermarket kits work well with the 4.2, I know people who are happy with the 2.8... I know people who aren't!

The 4.2 with an aftermarket turbo will tow your camper, and when you are "putting" around off road, still punch torque out plenty enough to get you where you want to go!
