Hi, I am devistated, after much deliberation we went out on a limb 4 months ago and bought a 2000 GU 3.0 TD wagon for the family vehicle, after having owned the MQ 3.3 TD for about 6 years and never having had a problem, so we searched around and found a very clean example, but having slightly higher than average Kms was with in the affordable realm. When we bought it it had some oil leaks and we requested the dealer to fix them and to ensure the engine was in good condition, this being fixed and checked the vehicle has performed faultlessly
.......................until today.
This morning we were heading down to town, I, as always warmed the engine up for the usual 15 min before departing, then with the engine warm drove onto the free way and no more than 5 kms later the engine lost power and plumed masses of smoke out the exhaust.
Having now spent several hours on the internet I have now come to the realisation that this is apparently a common fault with this engine, I have read that there are many post relating to this issue on this site, but after 10 archive pages of searching have not found anything with an out come.
As such I am writing to see if there is anyone on the forum that is able to help me out with some details as to who to contact at Nissan, wheather Nissan will infact even be interested in helping, and what my options are.
Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated, as we were due to be catching up with friends in Port Linclon in 4 weeks whom we have not seen in 5 years before they move overseas again, and with out the car and the costs likely to be associated with the repairs, we will not be able to make it to Port Linclon.

Thank you in Advance
Jon Roberts

Take it back to the dealer and jump up and down. Talk to the service manager. They should do something. You can try nissan Australia they should help if its been well look after. Also try other dealers some are more helpful then others

Have a read on this site too:
http://forum.patrol4wd.org/phpBB2

Its a common problem for the 2000 model and, depending on service history and mileage, Nissan should replace the motor for zero $. Just make sure that you let them know that YOU KNOW about the problems with that engine

I have yet to hear of one documented case where Nissan have not come to the party with regards problems with these early 3 litre engines.
Make sure you stand your ground.
Cheers

As the Author of many of the responses on previous posts ,once again I provide the action required to get your engine replaced by Nissan.
Take the vehicle to your Nissan dealer.
Contact Ms Val Davis at customer relations in Melbourne head office 03 9797 4411.
Follow up with a typed and faxed letter 03 9797 4400 clearly stating that you are aware of the engine faults in your particular model, and request assistance from their out of warranty rectification program.
You letter should describe the events leading up to the failure and include any service history.
If Nissan considers your claim valid they will ask the dealer to provide a report (which will say piston failure)on which they then make the decision to replace the engine with a current model.
Although I am critical of Nissan for not recalling these vehicles I must report that in the majority of cases they replace the engine with no argument (and so they should).
Do not waste your time trying to find out what the problem was as they will give you the tired old line that the oil capacity was not enough.
These engines still fail even after the sump capacity increase, and clearly a manufacturing fault existed.
Any one driving a 2000/2001 model approaching the 110,000km mark has every reason to be worried.
Good luck with your claim,be polite but firm.
Regards

Thank you so much guys your support has been sensational, the Patrol has done 196,000kms, and in the time I have had it has been serviced every 8,000 kms and always warmed up and down when being driven, I will call Nissan this morning and see how I go, I will keep you posted.

Is it the often talked about engine problem, or something less dramatic like a faulty / stuck e.g.r. valve or dirty oxygen sensor?

Unfortunatly it is the engine problem, when you open the oil filler when the engine is running it nearly blows the cap out of your hand and it blows so many fumes out of the cap it nearly chokes you, but thank you for the suggestion.
