2 quick questions.how do you know if your rear l.s.d diff(75 series) is knackered?secondly, there are big debates on lokkas front or rear but has anyone fitted the lokka type diffs to their vehicle?any special
tools and how long roughly to fit.(75 series or other)

I have had 2 lockrights on my 88 75 series for many years now.
They have not given me any trouble, and have transformed the offroad ability of the truck
I had
mine proffesionally installed

I've had a lokka on the front of my 75 series for two years, had no trouble, and can only say that the increase in capability is remarkable.
I had
mine installed by 4WD Systems, but the PR advise you could DIY, or at least get a
shop to do it.

Hi J.T, just leave her in 2wd and try to drive diagonally up a bank. Eventually, if the LSD is ok she will spin both
wheels, if it is not she will only spin the one wheel with no weight on it. Ive only ever had air lockers, expensive but great. (having said that I had heaps of problems with the last one I had fitted into the rear of my 80 series. Fitted by authorised dealer, not sure who to blame, them or the product. Had the centre out 3 times before they got it right.)

JT, I installed a Lokka diff lock into my 75 series on friday with the help of a mechanic mate who has all the right gear (air tools, parts washer, hoist etc). No we weren't mucking around and from start to finish took 2 of us 5.5hrs. (Now this is for the front which obviously is more involved than the simple rear setup - I pulled the full swivel hubs off and changed inner axle seals as
well) Most of my time was spent washing parts and regreasing (something you want to emphasise to who ever does yours that you want that done otherwise they will probably just whack it all together as is) . The instructions are next to useless and the quicker 4WD Systems improves on them the better.
If I was living in a city I would have chased down a
shop that has fitted one before (where I live I didn't have that benefit). We were lucky and everything worked just fine and it works a treat. Yes slightly more steering effort but on dirt surface I put it into a full figure 8 and could easily steer it and no I couldn't even hear it disengaging/engaging with my head hanging out the window.
I've done all things mechanical on my vehicles before but this job would have had me stumped without qualified help ( bleep poor instructions don't help). Good luck and if its done properly you won't be disappointed. (PS if your putting it in the front get a full rebuild kit for each side and replace while its all out)
Cheers,
Hughesy

Without being nasty, if your Yota has more than 20-30,000klms on it, the LSD will be fubar..
Amazing a company that big, its one thing they have never got right.
Go with ARB locker, the fact you can turn it on and off is so much more user friendly, and you get a compressor to pump up ya tires as a tradeoff.

JT. Best way I've found to test if an LSD is working is to
park diagonaly accross a deep gutter until you lift a wheel and break traction. While still lightly powering partly apply the handbrake & if your LSD is OK the car will move forward. Just lifting the wheel on it's own doesn't prove anything as even brand new out of the factory they will spin. Toyota LSDs are really set up for on road traction, slippery wet bitumen & loose gravel.
Cheers Craig..........
