Hi there,
The 5-speed gearbox of our HJ61 landcruiser broke down on our
Kimberley trip and a reconditioned one was put in in
Derby. It is working
well, however there is a rattle coming from it when driving in the 4th gear, especially when engine-braking. When I gently push the gear lever back (driving in the 4th gear), I can feel a kind of vibration/rattle coming from the g'box through the lever. I cannot feel any vibrations doing the same for any other gears. Would anyone know if this is normal? I understand, in the 4th gear, the drive does not go through the gear train, having 1:1 transmission....would tis account for the difference, hmmm? THe g'box has 12 months warranty (in WA-we live in NSW) and I wonder should I spend any more money on the mechanic to check this out?
Thanks,
JOseph

I have a 60 Series 5 speed 2H & there is no noise in 4th gear both on & off power, in fact it is the quietest of all the gears.

There is a plastic bush under the gear lever that will need replaceing. This will stop the rattle.
As for cost, not sure you will have to ring around.

thank you for the reply,
Well 55,
This makes sense, but one thing keeps worrying me: if I can feel the vibrations in the 4th gear, wouldn't that mean the cogs are moving in a wrong way in the g'box, causing excessive wear? Or is this how it works in this g'box. Sorry for carrying on, after breaking down in
Kimberley I would like to make sure something similar does not hapen again.

I agree with
Well 55. I used to have one of these and the 20cent washer that goes under the gear lever was the cause.
Get a new washer, screw of the cap around the gear lever that is on top of the gearbox. Put in new washer. It is a
seat for the ball. Gears feel like new again.

Thanks, Allan,
DId you have the vibrations only in the 4th gear or all of them? Funny thing about our g'box is that I noticed vibrations soon after the g'box was replaced. I booked it in with the mechanic at home a month ago (could not take it to
Derby, where g'box was replaced, hmmm) and miracously, the vibrations disappeared next day. HOwever, they appeared again yesterday.... I am worried something funny is going on with the cogs (or bearings) that are strained when 4th gear is engaged. HOwever, because I don't know how this g'box should perform (we got the truck 7 months ago), i.e. is this normal for it, I thought maybe it's best to consult this
forum.

My gear shift got worse and worse and suddenly I had no gears. However If I lifted the gear lever and held tension on it against the spring, the gear shift worked fine.
Suspect your rattle is just gears without tension and this is vibrated through to the selectors. The washer is cheap and simple and worth trying before getting too drastic. Can all be done from inside the vehicle.
Worth trying the cheap fix to elimanate the possibility of just a washer replacement.
It was relatively common with the 60 series.

4th gear is straight 1/1, so should be the smoothest gear of the lot...at the end of the day, if your worried enough, drain the oil and see whats in it....you can even put a bit in a container for spectro analysis (but with gearboxes it is usually what comes out on the plug that gauges condition :-)
Give me a call if you want... 0408965433, im only up the road at Farmborough
