hi gang

my mate has a 1988 gq patrol 4.2 petrol.

when driving along it looses power for a sec of two and then comes back.

you can see the tacho drop by about 400 rpm and them come back.

it happens more on bumpy terain than smooth but still happens on the smooth.

they have changed plus ciol and distibutor but still it happens.

has anyone else heard of this or had it happen and does anyone know what is the cause?

many thanks

Does he have an after market immobiliser?

If so check the switches, these things can cause al lsorts of bother after a time. Water gets into switches and causes rust/shorts etc and wires can work loose causing intermitant problems. I would suggest you by pass the system if possible and see what happens.

Cheers

cheers timber

no immobiliser.

it only started 3 days back after changing plugs, leads, coil and distrib.
also changed the air filter and fuel filter

it seems like a loose wire but all i have cheecked to the coil and ballast are tight.

it idles fine

change everything back to before, then try again

then change 1 component at a time till you find the problem one.

Hi, This is not specific to 4.2 motors but a faulty plug lead can cause symptoms like you describe. I know you replaced them but they can be faulty from new or even damaged whilst replacing if not careful. You could check them by buying one long new one and swapping it one by one after a test drive. Rus.

Also, if there is an oxygen sensor on the exhaust pipe, don't be afraid to change that to. These things can upset all sorts if faulty. Rus.

When you say "distributor" do you mean the points? The cams on the shaft tend to build up a film that acts like sandpaper and the points gap closes very quickly.

A worthwhile solution is to fit an electronic ignition system.

Check post number 14272 - some good advice there

The tacho usually works off the primary side of the coil ie, across the points, (if it has points). So the drop in indicated tacho reading tends to suggest a problem at the primary of the coil. A problem on the secondary of the coil (HT) can reflect back to the primary, but since you've changed the dist (cap/rotor?) and coil, it looks like a fault leading up to your coil, such as a significant drop in battery voltage at the coil. Don't recall the 88 gq having electronic ign, so this should simplify the location of the problem. A start would be to check for dicky connectors in the loom. I doubt if the tacho itself is causing the problem.
If required, I can copy the relevant circuits from the manual and email them to you.

ok boys here it is for you

we didnt in the end try changing one lead and so on and so forth.

what happen was my friend was out 4x4ing and it was getting late so when they pulled over to air up it was dark.

well he looked on the engine and could see little sparks coming from the leads they said it was like a christmas tree with all the lights.

so it will be change the lot of them

thanks for all your suggestions i guess if it wasnt dark we would never of known othere than changing leads out.
