I am trying to hire for May 2006 one or two 4WD to transport 14/16 school
friends around Cairns and Cooktown.
(Our Class reunion 1978). We, ourselves have our own Nissan patrol to
drive around

One 4WD rental company was renting a Landcruiser 80 series or
a troop carrier for $99. I rang the company, was told from the 1st April 2006
the price will increase from $99 to $189 per day.
These school friend will make our Cairns school reunion a bit of a holidays.
So, we'll be renting one or two 4WD, at least for a week, to go from Cairns to Cooktown through the Bloomfield track ++ camping/fishing around Cairns.
At $189 per day this starts to be pricy.
Does anyone has any other solution or know of cheaper 4WD companies operating for Cairns/Mossman/Cooktown?

You are going to transport 14/16 people in "one or two" vehicles ????

A troopie with maxed out seating and no equipment would comfortable work with maybe 6 people.. unless you are used to travelling as many locals do at times.

$189 per vehicle ? ... In April ?

Have you tried 4wdhire.com.au ? They are based or have a depot in Cairns.

I am still shaking my head at the idea of all those people in two vehicles unless of course you are renting two OKA's or other 4wd bus type vehicles. If the idea is to go camping/fishing etc.. then a troppie with 4 adults and equipment is about right. So if you have 16 grown adults plus camping gear then you might want to consider 4 vehicles ?

Just my thoughts

A couple of years back we hired a Prado (8 seater) from a mob called 'Billabong' rentals. We picked it up in Trinity Beach just 10 minutes North of Cairns.

Can't remember the price but I do remember going with them because they were the cheapest I could find at the time.

Just make sure you check the 'fine print' in relation to off roading. They may be 4x4's but not all compnanies want you to use them as such. An off road accident could void your insurance. ASK the question and read the contract.

good luck

3 years ago, we rented a Landcruiser from Sugarland Rentals in Cairns. There was some tracks we were told we were not insured on but the Bloomfiled was OK. We did the non-insured tracks anyway with nor problems.

I would also suggest 4 vehicles for that number of kids, especialy if they have gear with them.

Also remeber that rental 4WD's in general do not have any recovery gear so a snatch strap, some shackles, spade, etc should also be packed - maybe buy a spade when you get there, they are cheap enough.

A friend hired a troopy from Meteor Car hire in Cairns.
Went to the tip and back, no trouble with the car at all, no restriction on where we could go.
$120 a day
