Just renew with whom ever you were with - RACQ / NRMA / RACV / etc etc.

All the clubs are affiliated – so coverage is nation wide.

Needed assistance on the CSR 2 years ago. RAC did not want to know about it unless you pay up, $800 call out charge and I had RAC insurance and Roadside assistance

George- Im left wondering what your particular conditions were.... The Aussie Assist benefit with RAC (WA) comprehensive insurance covers things like that (when you are more than 100km from home). I came across one bloke who was touring the pilbara with a caravan and family and fell ill- His 4by, van and passengers were ferried back home, and him to hospital at the cost of RAC.
I imagine you would have done it at the time, but may be worth going through policy info to see if you can lodge a subsequent claim.

Hi BenSpoon
Answer back from RAC : They do not send anyone on tracks which are not a gazzetted road reserve. They told me that their RAC operator in Wiluna would charge $800 to come out on the CSR, approx 350 km each way

right- sorry. Was under the inpression it was an accident or similar.
Getting simply breakdown service out that far... I'd say you're pushing it short of making the most of your radios and hoping for a passer-by.

The only one that covers true outback stuff , was that Worldwide assistance Mob.

Haven't heard of them for a while.

NRMA etc , wont touch you unless they can get a 2wd truck to that destination (even IF they HAVE a 4wd one).

I emailed world assist, they didnt get back to me. Been told they no longer do it.
The only recommendation I can make to to have plenty of friends and contacts in places that you go to. Travel with a group if possible or at least a mate (unlike me:). And don't scrimp on service before you go, its false economy. Take the usual spares, even if you cant fix it perhaps someone that comes along can.

I think the main alternative to the motoring organisations is called Mondial.
Website:
https://www.mondial-roadside.com.au/mr/Roadside/ra00.aspx

In past years they used to give amazing support to outback travellers. Not sure whether this is still the case.

Cheers

Phil they were the same as Worldwide listed above.

Mondial World Wide Assist, no longer do 4wd stuff same a RACV etc they only go as far as 2wd access is available.

Join VKS 737 HF Radio Network for about $70 per year. They will put you in touch with members within reach who may be able to offer assistance should you have the misfortune to break down in a remote area. No one else will come and assist you without extracting a huge sum of money from your wallet. Anyway, if you have gone out there well prepared then you should not have a break down.

Interesting topic. What experiences have people had with the mfr's "24hr Roadside Assist" in real off-road circumstances? Nissan certainly claim to rescue you anywhere you break down. It seems that only the manufacturers offer this facility, even tho it's sub-contracted out to the likes of RAC etc, who won't provide this service to their own members. Has anyone actually been rescued from (say) the CSR under the mfr's Assist scheme?
When my gearbox in the GU failed on the Nullarbor, the message back over the HF was to drive it into Norseman in 4th gear. So I never put their claims to the test. (many thanks to the VKS737 net with their assistance on this one)

Fellas

Roadside assist means assistance at the side of the road. No way known the Canning (north of well 2 anyway) can be called the side of the road - or the Simpson, or the Connie Sue etc.

The best protection is a thorough trip preparation by a 4WD shop that knows what trip prep means (or yourself if you know), a decent snd sensible set of spares and tool kit. Then drive with care. If something goes belly up (eg a new Rangie with a failed engine computer in the middle of the Simpson or something), then be prepared to pay the operators at Birdsville, Wiluna etc etc the going rate (maybe 6 grand) to come out and get you.

If you are worried, pay to go on a tag along and let the operator worry about it! He will insist that you have the proper trip prep anyway, but will carry the tools and hopefully know how.

But forget the RAC, NRMA etc. You are getting away from it all!

you will not get any roadside assistance for any vehicle that goes further than a 2WD can go ,recently did the Canning Stock Route and at the well 33 comunity
a large sign says vehicle recovery from here $5000 and 50% up front .I believe the Simpson Desert recovery is approx $3000 up front and that gets you to birdsville only ,any special recovery equipment needed is at your expense !!!
cheers .
