Hi.

My wife and I have recently purchased the PEAK HILL caravan park www.peakhillcaravanpark.com.au and are now interested in displaying the waypoint for our park on our business cards and web page

The problem is I am not familar with GPS systems and how to correctly document the waypoint so others can easily input it to their equipment.

A friend has used his unit to give me these figures and I need to get confirmation on how they should be written for others to use

S 32 43.287
E 148 11.441

Is this correct or should I be quoting something else?

Many thanks

Leighton

Is that degrees, minutes, decimal minutes?
Need to know the datum too i.e. WGS84.
WGS84 is probably the best as it is all some of the cheaper units will do.

Good idea though. Wish more people included GPS positions on their advertising.

That would put you at Ween St off the Newell H/Way not far from intersection of Ween and Euhie?

If that is correct then the format hat you shown the lat/long is perfect

It is wgs 84.
And the spot is dead on.
Advertise it at the said co-ordinates with the added bit WGS 84.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Hello - number of formats but nothing wrong with yours.
Would suggest identifying degrees and minutes to avoid confusion with what numbers are (minutes, seconds etc - you are using decimal minutes - ie no seconds) so my suggestion is....

S 32° 43.287'
E 148° 11.441'

As suggested providing datum is also a good idea though may not make any difference -the coords may still plot inside park what ever datum you use.

Cheers

Best of luck with the caravan park.

Had a look at your web site and it looks a good set up.

Best wishes.

Nothing to do with your question, but I like the web site. Including the general information tab (eg tyre pressures) is a good idea.

Just out of curiosity - have you paid the NRMA their fee to be in their directory? Seems to me that it is losing its value as so many parks find other ways to poromote themselves and don't feel compelled to pay up.

Just interested

Hi Max.
Yes we do subscribe to the AAA tourism who are associated with NRMA RACV & RACQ this is the only organisation who have a consistent evaluation for the star rating.
We also survey every one of our customers to find out why they stopped in our park and one of the questions relates to the magazine they used to find us. The most common reply to this is the RACV,NRMA RACQ books, so that is also a major reason for us to continue with them.
We are not affiliated to any caravan park chain like Big 4 or Family parks because it costs us so much to join and then we have to give the members a discount so the only way to be profitable is to increase the site fees to ensure these organisations can pay for all their overheads. So what happens in the end, you guys out there pay more, because you are the only ones putting the money into the merry-go-round.
We do subscribe to some other site on the internet that now brings us up first in Google and it has greatly improved our hit rate. We are a small park and want to grow it and need to do as much promotion as possible. The people who stay here also tell us that the best promotion is word of mouth so we work very hard to ensure we exceed every customers expectations (fresh jam and cream scones delivered to your site around 16:00 on most days) but now I am going on too much sorry.

Hope this answered you question Max

Leighton,

Interesting point the ExplorOz business directory listing system supports the ability to tag your GPS position to a listing to allow visitors to get a dynamic map of your position. As an example see ShowMe - Peak Hill Caravan Park. For this system you need decimal degrees and datum WGS84. This system is being expanded to place our advertisers logos on the map instead of the crosshair image.

Personally I would think it best to show decimal degress as you do not need to use symbols to identify the D,M,S part. You can simply use
-32.72145 148.19068 (WGS84) - Your position as per the map.

PS: I hope I converted it correctly if you zoom in you should be able to get a very good idea of the position. These maps currently go to 1:100000 scale.

Hello Dave - hope all is well - while no expert on the subject and at the risk of sounding pedantic - I think that it is good practice to also identify decimal degrees with a symbol...while those using your great system (and other experienced map readers) can/will safely assume they are degrees who is to say that (for example) -35.4563 55.1906 isnt decimal minutes with zero degrees omitted (a point off west Africa)? A number with no units identified is just a number. I notice that Des Newman uses a decimal degree symbol on the coord display in OziExplorer and Im not about to dispute the fact with him!
Cheers

Yeah I guess however it would be more imperfect to assume (or write) the zero was omitted as a number not written could not be implied. Ah the joys - yes of course putting the symbol in makes it more perfect.

I have just been writting some Satelitte comms software and have been looking at GPS position encryption for being able to send positions in the least number of bytes and we looked very long and hard at some of the standards to determine how these positions should be written and we sort of concluded that the simplest was decimal degress using a signed leading value ie - for S and + or nothing for N similar to - for W and +/nothing for E.

Anyway lots of fun and joy so I will concede that the best is to add the symbol (and direction indication + - N S E W.

Hi Leighton

Nice sense of timing. We are planning a trip to Gosford next April - and after looking at your website and your caravan park - you have given us a definite place to stop at on the way over

Hi Jeff.

You are most welcome what sort of accommodation would you be looking for? If it is during the school holidays then I suggest that you book to ensure a spot.

Best regards

Leighton,

Have a look at the business description for this customer from the Business Search - you will see the GPS info and map link. GPSOZ.

These listings are $5/month and when you post in the forum it automatically adds your logo and a link to your business listing with GPS and map info. Have a look in the advertising menu and maybe see the new media kit on the Why Advertise page.

Hi David and all the others who have been so helpful
To a person who currently knows nothing about GPS other than experiencing it in Hertz rental cars in the USA on many occasions this is a steep learning curve.
We are attempting to move our park into "modern times" hence the GPS waypoint on our cards and web site (soon) also hope to shortly have internet access for you guys. We have looked into making it a HOT SPOT but I have to ensure we get the ROI for that.

I have been in touch with Explore OZ a few time and looked at getting into your accommodation section but it was not easy to access when I first looked but you have worked on that. I also attempt to keep the local fuel prices for Peak Hill up to date as we are one of the cheapest fuel stops along the Newell Highway. David I will take another look at your "business offer" and get back to you.

Now I have an offer for someone out there who likes to be creative. We are located close to the Goobang National Park, one of the newest in NSW. We are willing to provide free powered site for your camper/caravan for a week to the couple who would like to compile trek notes for this national park that we are able to use to promote this area and our caravan park. http://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/parks.nsf/ParkContent/N0096?OpenDocument&ParkKey=N0096&Type=Xo

Any takers?

Leighton
