Hi all,

I have a 2002 2.7 petrol hilux with 40,000ks Looks like It's developed an oli leak as I can see fluid drips (not much) at the bottom of the case. Is this a common problem? And if so what do you think it would cost to rectify. I did a very deep crossing a month ago - lapping at window sills. Could this be a factor?

Thanks,

BBails

Hi there BBails, don't know what the problem is unless you happened to hit it and put a stress fracture in the casing, it's not running from any where else and thats where it's last point is. Is it gear box oil or engine oil ? should be able to smell the difference. Is it still under warranty? I will give my mate a quick ring and see if there is any common fault with these he is head technician for toyota. Take care Vitara/Member Steve M

Hi again BBails, just rang my mate he said they did have a recall on the transfer case on some of them depending on manufacturing date Month/year They actually leak between the transfer case and the gear box. He said they normally only leak into an air pocket between the two and don't leak out but he' said thats not to say that your's could be the odd one out thats leaking through a seal. He said to check the level of oil in the transfer case will give you a fair idea as to whether it is leaking badly He said you will notice a big drop as it will be quit low level as it pumps a fair bit out into the air pocket. Hope this might help you. If this is the case toyota put a brand new transfer case in (case only) internals swaped from new to old. Take Care Vitara/ Member Steve M

I dont think Ive hit it - I havent done anything too extreme with it. Oil dosent look/smell like engine oil - its gathering at the bottom seam of the case.

Will Check the T/C oil level as suggested, when I work out how - pls dont laugh - its the first 4by Ive owned.

If there is a signifigant loss Ill ring toyota with the manufacture date. Failing that ill get it repaired.

Thanks for the advice,

Brent

Hi there BBails I would suggest you change the oil if you do discover any sighns of water in there as (SeeYou said) they might knock you back on a warranty claim then you will be RS Hope you work it out let us know how you go also mate don't be ashamed about a lack of knowledge involving mechanical problems, that's what this forum is all about to help each other out and try to help anybody with there questions.Take Care Steve M

If the transfer case is anything like mine, it's just like checking the diff oil. Take out the bung and poke your figner in.

If you have done deep water crossing (especially with hot engine/running gear) it may well pay to change the transfer/gear/diff oils anyway as you may have an igress of water in there through the breathers. Diff/gearbox/transfer case breather extenstions are a great idea if you plan to do a lot of these and it's something you can do yourself for under $20 bucks!

hi bbails

could of sucked water via the transcase breather and now have a oil water mix in the transcase.

also is the leak at the front of the case and traveled to the back due to the wind when driving. it could be the output shaft seal which if it is is an easy fix.

u need to wipe up all the oil and then go for a drive say about 10 ks and then look to see where the leak is coming from.

could be a few different things but u need to find where its coming from.

u could opne the fill plug and stick yr finger in to see is the level is over or way down.

let us know where its coming from and then we will be able to help better

If you had water lapping at the windows and you have not extended the breathers on the diffs, transfer case and gearbox then there is a really good chance (read 100%) that water has got into all of these places. you must drain all and replace.

Toyota will love you when you come in and they find water inside everything. I would suggest that this will not be covered by warranty. Especially if it was a month ago. The rust will have started in everything by now.

Hi Ya BBails

I have a 2.7 Petrol same as yours and have also had the oil leak you mentioned, my leak started after deep water usage also, I changed the oil (it was a water oil mix :-) and it fixed the problem.

It has not leaked since

My diff leaked once also, it had water in it, oil change fixed it also.
