Scoey
Hi all,
I have a '94 2.8D lux. The LN106. I'm looking at installing a turbo so I can reap all the wonderful benefits that are mentioned in the gushing testimonies on various Turbo Kit manufacturers websites. My problem is this. I'm reasonably educated on most things mechanical, but I'd be the first to admit that I know very little about most fourby fans friends - the turbo.
Does anyone know of potential probs associated with this modification and what are the pitfalls that can be experienced by new players? Or are they indeed just bolt on power? I've been told to run it at approx 9psi boost and let it breath thru a 2.5-3" exhaust. I've also been told that once installed and dyno tuned I'll be able to enjoy an increase of approx 20-25hp.
Any input/advice would be appreciated!
Cheers
Scoey!

Gday Scoey,Ive just fittd a DTS turbo to our 4 Runner 2.8 D but havent had the pump tuned yet(goes in Monday).I was told to make sure that the valve clearances were good and to get the injectors o/hauled before getting it installed. This is from a guy who has installed hundreds of these to the 2.8 D motors. On Monday they will tune the motor and fuel pump and then I'll see if it was worth the money.
Our motor has 190000kms,dosnt use any oil between
services(5oookms),sounds good and already has a 2 1/2 exhaust on it.Cost $2600 for turbo(water and oil cooled) and was a sinch to fit.I think they tune them to about 7psi.Quoted power increase is- STANDARD 3L 60kw 183nm
MTQ TURBO 3L 83kw 265nm
The guy thats fitting it used to fit another brand(carnt remember the brand)but said the DTS turbo comes in alot earlier making vehicle easier to drive.

Hi Scoey,
My mechanic fitted a denco turbo to my '92 hilux 2.8D around sept'04. Set it at 10psi boost. The denco kit includes a full SS 3inch exhaust. Cost about $3,200 inc the dyno. I had the 3L engine compression tested (at 200,000kms) with it looking good on all cylinders.
On the good side, after a couple of runs on the dyno and adjusting the injector pump, the hilux produced double the HP at the back wheels. It is fantastic for towing.
On the not so good side (meaning more costs) the turbo produces lots more heat especially when towing the 1.4 tonne camper trailer. The std radiator is ok for towing in Victoria but cannot handle the heat up Qld way in December. Also the clutch started slipping after a few days so in went a heavy duty clutch at $1,400.
I have the local radiator boys building me a 20% more efficient large core radiator for $650 (fitting it myself in a couple of weeks).
One other thing, you will need to have a small section of the RHS inside front guard cut away to allow access to the oil filter for changeover.
Enjoy the ride - cheers A

$1400 for a H/D clutch? I take it that that is fully fitted.I paid $350 for our H/D LUK clutch.Glad I fitted it.(twice -long story)
Had decided that cutting the guard was the only way into the filter now, glad you've confirmed it.
