Good survival skill’s, obviously new how to handle the situation. Stayed with the 4WD maybe tried to get him-self out of the bog or wait for another traveller to come by, then after all that failed he chose to set of the EPIBE and get the rescue team in.

Good to see it all ended well for once, there have been to many needles deaths in the outback lately.

If all sensible 4x4 owners were to stay with their vehicles, until all else falied then use the epirb. That way we would have far fewer deaths in this inhospitable land that can attack even the most experienced of four wheel drivers. Break a crankshaft, or put a hole in the block, and you aint going any where. If some one passes you by and lends a helping hand , its your lucky day. Once the water and food have goneTHATS the time to set off the EPIRB.

WEST of Derby would put him out in the Indian Ocean somewhere, never get out of that bog.
I was always led to believe that an EPIRB should only be activated when the situation is a matter of life or death. I don't think the being bogged comes into that category, I may be wrong.
Perhaps a more accurate position of where he was stranded may help
open to discussion

If I exhausted my water/food after waiting a few days for help after a serious (non-repairable) breakdown or serious (non-revoverable) bogging and there was little prospect of it coming then that is when the EPIRB gets activated. If I waited any longer then it WOULD be a life or death situation.

Other long range comms (HF Radio or Sat phone) may have been good in this situation but you have to work with what you have.

Actually George, the Indian Ocean is about 150km west of Derby. Derby itself is on King Sound so it is quite conceivable he got into a life threatening bog west of Derby... Depending on the route he took, there isn't a great deal between Derby and Broome, presumably where he was either headed or coming from.
