Hi Paul
not a problem just related to your cruiser. has to do with the speed and depth of the
water you are crossing and the fans in the cruiser.
there is some more info in the past posts.

We have had literally dozens of 100 series with this problem up this way specially the auto turbos. I have damaged 1 radiator myself not in deep
water but hitting surface
water only inches deep at speed. The plastic radiator fan is too soft and bends straight back into the radiator, we are replacing all 100 series with 78 series fans that are much stiffer. I have also placed a cowl from my Bullbar back under the radiator. I have had no further problems after numerous Cape trips this year. This is a huge problem that Toyota refuse to be responsible for blaming it on operator error.

Hi Rob
What do you have to do to replace the fan in the 100s with a fan from a 78s - is it a straight switch? Unbolt the old one and replace it?

Yep!
Low speed
water crossings at the Cape pulled the fan thru my radiator - luckily it was spotted before we destroyed the motor - 100 Series TDI Auto.
Spoke to Toyota - they say it has never been a problem

Thanks for your reply yes the fix is to put an 80 series fan on but if i fit that fan i will wave my warranty. Trying to get Toyota to addmit there is a big problem.

I use to use a piece of chain on 2 dog clics in the part for
water crossings .
switch off engine , clip chain onto fan to stop it turning , start and cross , never had a issue . But not sure if it can be still done on the 100

Have a look at post number 3247. Is a common problem with them! Seems like Toyota are telling blatant lies if they say that there have been no problems.

How does one get back to post 3247? Putting PostID:3247 into the search doesn't seem to work for me. Given that we're up to 25,000 or so posts, getting back to 3247 might be a slow process. Or have I missed something?
Any thoughts on the idea of drilling a small hole in a blade tip and tying the fan to something with a length of cotton. The theory being that the fan drive will break the cotton when it needs to. I guess this assumes a coolish motor for the crossing, which is what we should be aiming for anyway. But it also means the inconvenience of stopping/cooling/tying for the most insignificant of crossings if the info in the posts above is correct.
