I am interested if anyone out there has replaced the 4th gear synchro on a 2001 model 4.2 litre DX GU Patrol cab chassis as the one in mine is starting to crunch fairly badly. How much did it cost as Nissan has given me a rough quote only at approx $3000.00 depending on what else they find when it is stripped down.
Also i am interested in fitting cruise control what is the best unit for the job.

Martin,

My uncle has just had his 2000 gu wagon's gearbox rebuilt for $3000 in Norseman, so if all you want done is 4th gear synchro then I would suggest it would be a fair bit cheaper than this. Your model as well as mine and my uncle's is around the time of the shorter spline, as my uncle found and you might too, there may well be much more than you expect to fix once you open her up. Good news is with a nice letter to Nissan my uncle was able to recover $1500 from them towards the fixup, maybe this is worth looking into before you start. Good luck and start cooling the beers down now for a big job ahead.

Regards Trevor.

Ezy one..As I drove Studebaker 6x6 trucks in army, they had no syncro on any gear, just taught to drive the "doubling the clutch" method..You can drive your rig with no syncro at all as it is the gear eq of "auto front hubs",not neccessary..Just another thing to die out there somewhere..Becomes second nature after a bit..Ever noticed there is no syncro on reverse? Yet it still gets used..!MPG:8!

Make sure you change the oil first
If its got gear oil in it ,it will afect the syncros
Use castrol VMX -m and give it anoither go
Worth atry as I have had the same proble and it cured the fault
