In the past I have not been a big fan of the HF radio, but I have changed my mine.
On the Canning trip, we had a HF radio with us and I can now see there value. Real time track info, changing weather and knowing who else is on the track and where they are. This info we were able to get with the HF. I will not be giving up the Sat Phone as they are an important part of our trips.

I can get hold of a HF unit but I will have to install it and get it set up on the VKS net work. What I do need to know is there anything special about installing the radio and also how do I get started with VKS.

I don't know how to use the HF and I am not sure if the unit will come with a hand book, if it does not have the instructions on how to operate it where can I get hold of the information? I think that it is a Codan.

I personaly wouldnt install a HF radio. Why? It is going to be a VERY important part of your comms equip and possibly may be called upon in a life threatening situation. You cannot afford to have it installed incorrectly.

How to use it? Check the webpage for the make of HF you have Codan or Barrett or Icom and they will amost certainly have a manual in pdf format for you to d/load.

Then just sit in your vehicle and listen to the scheds and when you are feeling ok about it just put out a call with your callsign and see what happens.
