I am after a UHF radio and ebay has a few of them, but the really cheap ones are like this called SYNTRX. see here

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5798400027&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

They dont have a display as it seems to be on the mic and this one needs an eprom to program although some are pre programmed. What is involved in getting these things to work? are they regular UHF's? what makes em cheaper?thanks.

F4, don't touch it with a Barge Poll.

You'd be far better looking at somthing like this:

Uniden UH-011

Or

wait around for a GME TX3000 to show up, both are older models but very reliable and not badly priced normally.

Unless you really know what your doing steer away from the ex-commercial type radio's otherwise you will most likley find yourself disappointed and outta pocket.

Bought a uniden 0-11 sundowner of ebay for a neighbour ,fine stuff watching the bidding in the last few min , can only say will not do an electronic item off ebay again, item was NOTas described ,still had wet black paint when it arrived , cost another $120 to have unit fixed by radio shop to get it to work , beware the "bargain".

Evening F4Phantom,

I have a Syntrx mounted under the seat in my Patrol with the mic connected to a remote cable head under the dash, and find it a fantastic neat unit. As for the other units mentioned earlier I have no experiance with them and they may be very good units also but as for the Syntrx, I wouldnt buy anything else unless it was a hell of a good deal. The unit I have transmittes at just over 21w which gives me a lot better range than most you can buy at places like DS etc that generaly (not all) only transmit at only 5w. They are a few years old now but a good one will still be going when the second coming occures, their built like brick out houses. From what I have learnt they were used in aircraft , by the police in most states and the emegency services as well up untill the late 90's. I was a bit put off by the display being in the mic before I started using mine but have found it fantastic as all the controls are right there at your finger tips and in your face where you can see them.
If you want any more info drop me a line and I'll tell you what I can or try and find out for you.
Note: NO I do not sell them in any way or form, I simply have one and strongly recomend them.

Hey Boo, i am now a bit confued with this radio thing. If you buy a standard UHF radio from a shop with 40 channels, what is the difference between your radio and a normal UHF? as far as i can tell
1, info on mic
2, more power
3, you have to program it yourself??

i am of the understanding that the 40 channels are frequencies which dont move, therefore why the need for any programming at all? perhaps there is a frequency allotment aside from the set channels which can be used by the public. anyway i am interested to know a bit more on these. Thanks

also i think 5w is the legal limit so you may be breaking the law, i have read if you do the right thing and be nice you probably wont be picked up.

The Syntrx is a radio for commercial use and thus have commercial frequencies installed, introduced about 1988 and ran for 10 years. There are VHF and UHF models. The earlier models used a PROM for programming the later models used a EEPROM. The PROM models can be converted to EPROM using an adapter board. Yes they will need programming with CB freqs usually by a hobbyist with the necessary equipment and software unless you can pick one up already converted. A good solid radio well suited to bashing around in a 4x4.

Arvo F4Phantom,

Your right there is a "legal" limit of 5w for domestic type radios but from my experiance the authorities arent too concerned about the more powerfull units PROVIDED the're used properly. Have never heard of anyone being warned or fined over it. My thoughts are, if your out the back of the nevernever you want the best transmit/ recieve you can get.

Also on the programing side... all you need to do is make sure that it has already been pre programed with the normal 40 channels as used in the more common radios (not sure of the frequency range, but will find out for you if you want), The majority of the ones advertised on ebay have been setup already, but just check before you bid. I bought mine off ebay and its great, I'm currently trying to get another one to setup on my campertrailer as a base station type setup incase of emergencies etc when we go out bush incase I put the saw through my leg collecting firewood or somthing similar so I can keep in touch with camp.

The Syntrx was a commercial unit of quite a few years ago which met commercial specs, inlcuding 20-odd watts output, and was legal for the application it was designed for. It can be programmed to the UHF CB channels, but the output exceeds the legal limit. Also needs to be programmed by a techie.

There's one in the trader section for $200. I was tempted but the alternative is a GME 3200 from Prestige Coms for $299 bundled with an antenna. I'm leaning towards to GME.
