In addition to my love of travelling this great land I LOVE music as I camp/drive. I am the proud owner of a Toyota SR5 Hilux Turbo Diesel with TVan on tow.
Has anyone had experience with set up of a music system/DVD/photo system through a laptop in their camper trailer.
Would welcome all responses from those who enjoy travel and music etc.
Kind regards.
Mick.

I have a laptop system setup which works quite
well;
. Most music kept as mp3 on hard disc and use "musicmatch", have about 5000 songs.
.Use an fm transmitter ($30) and play sound through any fm receiver (car stereo or other portable dive)
. Laptop plays DVD, so kids entertained on long drives, they can listen through fm headphones or the car stereo
. Can also plud in GPS receiver ($100 on ebay) into laptop for a cheap system
I use a small inverter for the car, but batteries on
mine last 1.5 to 2hrs playin DVDs and ages on mp3 (screen closed).

Thankyou for your response....I want to set up a system where I can play most everything from my laptop...music (through speakers) photo storage, DVD,GPS,video capture and play back plus general computer stuff, may have to go with an inverter as you have done .
MANY THANKS.....tvanmick

Have used an inverter from "Dick Smiths" for years now with this setup. It creates a pure sine wave which is great for computers. Laptops normally run of their batterries even when plugged in, so voltage changes should not be an issue (as I said I have never cooked my laptop). I have also got a analog/digital receiver ($210) that fits into the card slot - just incase you wanted to watch TV on the laptop

Why not install a car stereo mp3 player in your van and hook it into the 12v supply from your car battery. The cheaper models are available for around $200 and you can fit a huge selection of music on just a few disks.

Hi I use my laptop in
lue of my TV if I am out of range of a TV transmitter. I have a car radio installed in my caravan that plays cassetts but has provision for a plug in CD player. I plug my laptop into this and get reasonable good sound for CDs and DVDs

I don't think there is much doubt that Apple does the best 'media centre' laptops, however, mapping software needs a PC. Unless you run Virtual PC which enables your Mac to emulate a PC (clumsy option) the practical option is to use a PC laptop and compromise on the entertainment side of things. At least there is a Windows version of Apple's excellent free iTunes application for storing and playing music. You need never take another tape or CD away with you. You can connect the PC to the amplifier either with a cable or, if you don't have auxiliary input sockets, a wireless system as mentioned above (Belkin). Pity they don't make OziExplorer for Macs.
