Do they work?

I believe the idea is to direct air down the back windows to keep the crap off...Does it really happen or do they just look good?

Just thought I'd ask before parting with cash!

Thanks in advance

It depends. My GU has one, but the car still seems to get dirty on the arse-end.

Went down about 50 K's of wet gravel roads and back window was completed covered in red crap.

BUT......... I havn't taken it off to see if there is any difference.

Yeah, I've had one fitted for two years and have not noticed any improvement to the rear. I don't mind the look of the thing but the money spent could have been used on something else in hindsight.....which we all know is a lovely thing.

Cheers,

Patrick

I have no idea whether or not they keep crap off the window, but they do make your fuel consumption just a little bit worse. Anything that cuts into the airflow over your vehicle will.

By deflecting air into the vacuum behind the car may in fact improve your fuel consumption after all its that vacuum that deposits the crap there in the first place

The post was..do they work..so why did you answer if you did'nt know instead of trying to be a expert on the aero dynamics of a 4wd..you claim that they make your fuel consumption worse..is this from data that you recorded and the tests that you have done....i think not.

Dear Govo. I fess up. You have caught me out. I haven't carried out tests of my own. I also acknowledged in my opening sentence the aspect I was commenting on. This is a discussion forum and as is evident in almost any thread you might care to open, readers respond to aspects of the issue. Virtually anything that doesn't smooth airflow will descrease fuel consumption to some extent. Note the lengths manufacturers go to to smooth body lines. Wings on performance cars do decrease mpg, but the groundforce they generate pays off in improved handling. Anything that projects on the roofline is likely to increase fuel consumption. That's why most users try to smooth airflow over roofracks with wind deflectors.
Perhaps your concluding three words sums your position up.

Andrew,
When I bought my GU back in 2003, my first trip away was into the Gawler Ranges, and by the time I arrived at my campsite, I could have shovelled the bulldust off the top of my spare tyre and rear step. Since then I fitted a rear deflector and have noticed a significant reduction in the amount of dust that builds up. Also rain spray is reduced in the area that is affected, so I would say that they definately work.
