Hi all
Thinking about our first trip to the Cape and not sure if we should take the campertrailer (KK) or the tent? Have a 2004 Rodeo TD. Will we miss out on too much with the trailer or not.
Also, would it be getting a bit too late to be heading off in the the next few weeks?
Thanks.

Why would you buy something as expensiveas a KK and not use it to go to the Cape? What do you do with it ? A KK like most of the better designed Campers are built to be used and taken to all our 4wd destinations. Cheers Rob

Thanks Rob
We have no doubt about the KK, that is why we got it. At this stage we only have the Rodeo and it is our first trip to the Cape, I am still trying to talk the wife into it!!!!!!
Maybe we should do one of your tours!!??
Thanks Dao

The Cape can be as easy or difficult as you care to make it. The most vital requirements are commonsense, sensible speeds to suit the conditions and a well maintained vehicle and if in doubt ....don't. You are a long way from help if something goes wrong. Sometimes we have to go up or come back empty to either meet ppl flying in or when our ppl fly out from Bamaga. We allow about 15 hours drive time Bamaga - Cairns. Takes a minimum of 8 days one way with ppl on board. Dao, I specialise in 8 day accommodated tours either up or back with flights to or from Bamaga. Maximum six ppl in 100 series Cruiser or private charters any where in Oz.
You get to relax and enjoy your holiday leave all the worries to us. Cheers Rob

We took our CT with boat and did the OTL from bottom to top in may/june this year. We have stock standard triton and the only problem we had was on our way home we smashed shackle on our CT. We repaired this and made it home without any other problems. This happened on the by-past roads which were worse than the OTL.You would have trouble travelling home (south) on the OTL as the exits are too steep to drag the trailer over.

Did you travel on your own or with another vehicle?

We were traveling on our own but you meet so many people doing the same thing. We left weipa and meet up with other groups and in the end there were five vehicles (four with trailers) traveling to the top.

I'd take it. You won't have too many drama's getting to see everything. It's still not too late to head off but it will be starting to get quite warm and maybe little humid. But what's best is there will be less people around.

Quote: "slow down 90 ks max and 40 psi on the tyres ".......please tell me that is a "typo"....P L E A S E...........

Not so worried about the speed you've recommended....although I would've suggested more like 70 to 80k/h (depending on road conditions as you would expect anyway.....some sections you will be down to 25k/h).

BUT......those tyre pressures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please tell me you've made a typo......

40psi is at the high end of pressures to be recommended for the highway. When you're on those sorts of tracks you should be looking at more like 25psi. Otherwise you will make the road all corrogated. Come to think of it, perhaps that's why those tracks ARE so corrogated; cos inconsiderate travellers use ridiculously high tyre pressures.

Please lower your tyres when you get onto the dirt.

Thanks

Roachie

Roachie is spot on there, Snailbait... 40 psi is why we have so many corrugations and also the best way to shake you rig to bits, especially at 90ks...I travel to the Cape every year and run with about 28 psi depending on load and very few problems "so far"

HI ALL
sorry i should have said on the dirt roads 90max speed 40 min tyre preasure on dirt roads this will stop sharp large stones and stakes from attacking your sidwalls now i have gone over the simpson on 48 psi in the tyres and i have not spiked the the tyre or had a puncture
This procedure was writen in a 4 wd monthley tyre compero some months back and it was writen by the tyre fiter on the onadatta (sory for the speling ) at wilson creek just before the pink road house
MY vehicle manufacture have a tyre lable and your vehicle does too and they specfiy 48 psi in rear tyres and 28 front for all roads anf all loads
the other thing is that tyre pressure does not shape the corregation i have seen trucks with 4 trailers a road train with about 50 wheels going with a 100 psi in there tyres and they do nothing to the corregation but they do stuf up the road in other ways
If you guys have to put the tyre preasure down so low the bag of the tyre just bag so big that any stone or stake comming your way will cause a falure
What else can i say just that i have had 5 FOUR WHEEL DRIVES and i have done the same thing on all of the vehicles and i can honestly say i have never had a tyre falure on the out back roads i have traveled and ih have done at least a 100.000 KS ON UNSEALED OUT BACK ROADS
simpson birdsville the Great stony desatrte the Stewart dessart bURK AND WILLS grave
I have just put on a new set of 235/R16 85 BF GODRICH ALL TERAIN TYRES the last set did 55000 ks and could have gone on for a further 10000 kys i was doing a trip past Broken hill in the last NSW SCHOOL hoioidays so i thought i woud change them i have done about 30000 ks and the little tit has not worn of yet
regards

48 lb in your tyres to cross the Simpson Desert? No way you would bog constantly and do untold damage. I run 36 in 285\75 on my cruiser on road 28 offroad 18-15 desert. "MY vehicle manufacture have a tyre lable and your vehicle does too and they specfiy 48 psi in rear tyres and 28 front for all roads anf all loads." No vehicle manufacturer will spec those tyre pressures they are unsafe.

I agree we the tyre pressure
25 would be about correct - It is however a bit of a trade off, low pressure can mean side wall damage. We ripped several lugs off our Coopers (on exit from some of the river crossings) and even with low pressure, on discussing the problem with a Cooper dealer was told that high pressure will rip off lugs.
