Ok, I am in the market for a new (2nd hand) 4by. Ive always been a one brand man but am looking around a bit this time. Whats the low down on the patrol motors. I now know of three local that have had major failure. One at 1200ks,(not a typo) one at 34000 and one 55000, is this really that common. My other concern with the Nissan is the semi floating rear end. Has anyone ever brocken a rear axle on one. If you do are you stuffed, as in does the wheel fall off like happened to me when I had a Hilux. Thanks in advance.

I would do a search for posts on the 3.0l and you will find the good, bad and ugly. I haven't heard of a rear axel breaking (have seen housing bent like a banana though!) but they are generally extemely reliable.

Muddy,

I think your concerns about the 3lt have merit but if you still like the layout of the patrol, maybe look at the 4.2lt. I have had a reliable run out of mine. Predictably it has, in the past, run hot when worked hard, but to date has never let me down. 5th gear can be a problem in them around 99, 00, 01 models. Apart from that nothing to worry about from my perspective.
Happy hunting.
Trevor.

I am assuming that you are talking about the 3LTr T/Diesel engines if they were the early model ones then apparently this was not uncommon for them to blow Engines with low k’s on them. Nissan say’s the problem is fixed (Still I would not touch one) I would just pay the extra a get the 4.2Ltr or pay less and get 4.5 petrol.

I know 2 people who between them have had 6, 4.2 diesel patrols over the years and out of the 6 only one has had a engine failure, and that was because the timing chain that let go.

The 3lt patrols had troublesome pistons between 2000 and the end of 2001(not sure of exact dates) when Nissan fixed the problem.

If you are looking at a Nissan then I would go the 4.2 diesel which should give you 500,000km.

The Nissan drive train is legendary for toughness and I doubt if you will break an axle on them unless you do something really silly. The rear wheel bearing fits inside a separate housing which bolts on the the axle housing and not like the Toyota where the axle is 'floating' with the bearing fitted inside the axle housing. With the Toyota however you can remove the axle and replace the wheel and drive on via the front wheels.

The 4.2lt Nissan engine has Timing Gears and not a Timing Chain as mentioned above.
