Howdy, my 4.5l petrol 100 series seems to smell quite 'fumey' as if it is running too rich.

It goes great, idles well and has only done 160,000km's. It doesn't blow smoke, doesn't smell oil smokey and the oil still looks like new so I doubt it is oil problems. The air filter looks clean too.

I can smell exhaust fumes on the rear of the car when it's parked. Is this what they all smell like or have I got an ehgine management system problem? I even went to the extent of having the tailpipe lengthened because I thought the exhaust gas flow was being interfered with by the towbar.

I run it on both LPG and BP Ultimate 98RON fuels.

Cheers

check your O2 sensors.

sounds like one has died and your fuel map is running rich.

Where are they situated on the engine?

Can I replace them myself?

Are they an expensive item?

Thanks!

1 on the exhust header down pipes.

2 yes they just unscrew. note use penatraction oil first.

3 yes for some reason they are on average over $200 a unit.

take your car to a workshop and get them to test them first.
You can test them your self with a analogue mutimeterwith the car running. the needle must move quickly up and down the scale, if the needle stays still or move slowly the sensors dead.

The rule of thumb for most sensors are that there are 3 wires going into each unit.

One wire is the power wire that runs 12 volts.

One wire is a test fault wire that runs 12 volts back to your cars EFI system.

The last wire is a return voltage wire straight to you cars EFI computer this is the wire you want to tap into.

AS I said earlier you can only check the sensor while the motor is running.

Either that or your CAT is just worn out, that would also make it smelly, howver wouldn'd be anything to worry about, is it using a lot of fuel or is it running about the same as usual, if it's not using more fuel , it's not running rich...

never clean the MAF unit with wd40. WD 40 leaves a residue and when the MAF self cleans any paricles caught by then oil on the hot wire will burn and cake on the wire resulting in failed readings .

Use a contact cleaner or my favuorite AEROSTART from CRC.

lc100 4.5 does not have an o2 senser in exhaust .I think this is why they have such poor fuel economy on highway as they they cant trim the fuel mixture in closed loop without one , they just set them rich to stop them burning valves as the injecters get old(dirty).
