A few months ago, I bought an 04 Forester which in most respects is a fine car. The great exception are the absolutely woeful headlights, particularly high-beam - lack of intensity, focus and range. Everything has been checked and tested and hi-intensity globes don't improve things (
well, maybe 5%). I'm not keen to spend the money on Xenon, assuming they can be fitted - is there another effective answer?

I don't know about the Forestor but in general you could
a) upgrade the wiring loom to your lights to reduce voltage drop
b) upgrade your bulbs with the "plus 50" types as I assume higher wattage would melt the headlights (you've obviously tried tis though)
c) fit spotlights although this won't help low beam

Thanks Utemad,
I've done b) and c) and as you say spotlights don't fix the low beam problem and can't be used in the city anyway (superb on country roads though).
a) is probably worth looking into, however the car has a 5yr waranty so I'd have to check out the effect of re-wiring on the warranty.
Thanks for fast reply.

When I say upgrade the wiring what you actually do is add more wiring. You keep all the original wiring but the original wiring is then used to switch the new relays/wiring.
If you have a multimeter you can check to see if this will help. Compare the voltages at the battery with the voltages at the back of your headlights with the engine running. If they vary too much then look into the wiring upgrade. Too much might be 0.5-1 volt or so?
I couldn't see this affecting your warranty. You don't actually need to cut anything and it can be returned to standard anytime you like.
I remember reading an article about the WRX a few years ago and they made mention of how bad the headlights were. Maybe it is a Subaru thing?

Thanks again Utemad, I'll look into that. Yes, I think it is a Subaru thing. Motor writers and others frequently mention headlight inadequacy with Subarus. Subaru base a fair bit of their marketing on 'good engineering',
well this problem ain't a good demonstration. My 25 year old Merc had incomarably better lights - now THAT was good design/engineering so long ago.

G'day RR,
Yeah, poor headlights are a known issue with Foresters.
They have rectified it with the newly released MY06

One option that i tried and seems to work
well in my wifes Jeep Cherokee Limited was to upgrade to the HIR globes from ARB.
The only thign there was the high beam were not too bad on her car but the low beam were woeful, BOTH are significantly better now, particualrly the low beam.
Nothing else needed to be changed.
Mark
