Hi

Anyone been along this recently from pinaroo to Red Bluff? Whats it like and how long would it take to drive the border North South section? Also, camping is available at Broken Bucket, Big Billy and Red Bluff. Any ideas on better spots, access etc. Spending a weekend in that area in a month so any tips re things to do or see appreciated.

Howdy, the places you mention to camp are ok, Red Bluff being my pick of the three. However I would prefer Coburg Pines, Red Gums, Blue Gums, or Yellow Gums for camping, all are more central for setting up camp and doing day trips from there. Coburg Pines is also nice and sheltered if weather comes in, ie, you can camp up against the scrub no matter which way the wind is coming from. Many places you can camp, enjoy the area, you will return many times.

We are heading down the Border Track on the 10th September. If we go before you I will let you know how we found it. We intend camping in the grampians Thursday night, Big Billy Bore on Friday and red Bluff Saturday.

Broken bucket is a nice spot to camp but leaves a longer drive the following day to get to Red Bluff.

thanks for this.

We are not going until the end of september so recent feedback would be great. We are thinking of camping at Big Billy and then doing a day trip around the border track and back to BB. Like to know if this is reasonable as some info says it takes 9 hrs. Comments on how difficult and how long it takes would be great.

cheers

Big Billy Boe is a great campsite, as is Red Bluff. Check prior to going as the Border Track is often closed by the ranger, sometimes for little apparrent reason. Big Billy is fairly central, has good clean toilet and plenty of fire pits. I'm heading there Melb Cup weekend so any up to date feedback would be great.

Will do. I suspect a round trip from Big Billy will be a long day particularly if the Murrayville Track is slippery but will let you know how we find it w/e 10/9.

We were down that way on the weekend, we didnt do it but the border track was open. The tracks we did were all dry and depending on the weather will probably stay that way.
After having a chat with the ranger he reckons the track could be closed soon, if the weather remains the same.
We came home via Pertendi and the centre track, two and a half hours with a couple of stops.

Thanks for the extra info

Where is the ranger and do you have a contact number? Is the centre track an alternative to the border track, ie easier, faster, slower?

thanks

Rangers phone munber is 08 8576 3690

The ranger doesn't like dry sand but there should be a good dump of rain with the low forming tomorrow in the bight and moving across.

Gday again,
The centre track has smaller sandhills and less clay flats. I think most head to the border due to the bigger sandhills. The centre has heaps of smaller ones, more than enough to amuse me. It still has that feeling of remoteness.

Travelled the section from Pinnaroo to Serviceton on the weekend. The sand was very dry and loose on the Saturday when we made the trip. A little rain would make it easier. There are some big dunes either side of Red Bluff but all have side tracks, although some are still steep.Several dunes have four or five tracks up so the secret is to pick the easiest route. I had my tyres at 25 psi until the biggest dune which I failed to clearfirst attempt. Dropping to 15 psi solved the problem.

Apart from the dunes the track was firm and the sand not at all deep.

South of Red Bluff there are some massive bog holes - deep enough to cover the vehicle. Just when you think you have cleared the worst another one shows up. All have sidetracks - make sure you chose one before you get too close to the bog hole as there is not a lot of room to turn and there is a fair amount of scrub between the main and side track so you would have to reverse. Of the four vehicles in my group three got stuck at least once.

We camped on Friday at Big Billy Bore. It took 3 1/2 hours from Pinnaroo to Red Bluff allowing stops at Fish Ponds and the Trig Point Lookout for lunch. It took two hours from Red Bluff out mainly because we had to pull out the three bogged vehicles.

I went around the bog holes but my companions all had to have a go. One took it too fast covered the engine in mud , bottomed out and then had alternator trouble, a second bottomed out and got stuck, the third also went in too fast slashed mud into the engine compatment which somehow got into his fuse box, the engine stalled but when we cleaned it he could not get enough traction to drive out. Some bog holes are so deep and narrow you cannot open the vehicle door to get out if you become stuck so have a back up vehicle.
