Does any one know of the best place to buy a personal EPIRB, small pocket type
Are there any personal EPIRB's available that work on the 406MHz, new frequency which will be the standard in February 2009.
Any information would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi George
Give Whitworths Marine a try I believe they have stores at Mosman Park and Leederville
I found them the cheapest in Melb when I bought mine.
Good Luck

Hello George

Bias Boating Warehouse
208 Stirling Highway
Claremont

Had a look at a 406 beacon and thought it was two big , too heavy , and too expensive [$US 1,000] . At $329 I think GME MT310 121.5 BEACON is good value . By 2009 the price and size of 406 beacons should come way down .

I have no connection with Bias Boating or GME

$329 is way too expensive for a GME MT310. You should not have to pay more than about $239 for one.

Check out Prestige Communications:

Excellent company, great prices and quick delivery.

Actually, just realised - same numbers - different order - maybe you just did a typo with the price and meant $239. Sorry if this was the case.

George,
You can get them on Ebay, the 406 ones may be best left a while until the price comes down a bit when we get closer to 2009. You can get a strobe EPIRB for about $395 I think, $295 without, these are sold in most of the camping shops and 4X4 stores. I got mine at the Caravan & Camping show in South Perth, Sunday Times and the Quokka two more places to look. I like the idea of the 406 model because it's actually registered to the owner, a good idea. I had my stolen out of my vehicle, so I'm looking at present. You can get quite a good deal at the local 4X4 shop in Osbourne Park, reasonable anyway.

Keep the shiny side up

Phone around the boat shops. In QLD, you need one when going something like more than 2km or so from shore so they sell a lot of them.

If you buy a small pocket one, it will need new batteries anyway by 2009 so do what w edid, buy a pocket one and in 2009 thow it way and get a 406MHz one at the 2009 price.

Pocket one is good for those walks in the bush, for the boat or off roading as they takeup so little room.

Thanks to everyone for your contribution. After checking out most suggestions I found Whitworth Marine in Leederville to have the best selection and best prices.
I have changed my mind about the 406, can get a personal ARC 406 satellite for $649.
However I think most of you are correct with suggesting that the GME MT 310 at $239 is the way to go and get a 406 when prices are more reasonable, I hope, in 2009
Cheers
