On the radio in melb this morning, ACA advertisement for this evening's show, "Its official, why 4wd drivers are a law unto themselves". Such a grabbing headline, they are so rare in these days of 4wd tolerance.

With all these new model cars about today it's hard to define a 4WD. I see that Mazda have braught a new one out now. Perhaps all wheel drive excludes them from abuse. I own an 80 series L/cruiser that is all wheel drive. So do many others

I'd love to get onto one of those idiot sensationalist journo's that tout this garbage to the general population when it's really the media that's the law unto themselves! This arguement burns me to the core! It's totally flawed but it still seems to get the time of day on air and in print. Now I know I'm speaking to the wrong people, but I've had enough! Pls allow me to vent!!
I believe the majority of arguements are these:
4WD's are gas guzzlers with thier massive motors! WRONG!!!
Granted, their are a few fourbys getting around with big donks but the majority would be somewhere in the 3.0lt range i'd say. Now how many HSV's and XR8's do you see getting around? Not to mention the standard Falcons and Commodores both having bigger than 3.0L motors. Surely when they rid the streets of 4WD's they'll get rid of them too!
4WD's are too big! WRONG!!!
Yep there's some bloody big trucks getting around, so we'll get rid of those and keep all the little suzi's etc Oh sorry, I thought it was the 4WD bit that was the problem? Fair enough so 2WD is the go! So those monster F trucks that are only 2WD are fine and we'll let all the WRX, Skyline, and even some Pulsar owners that since thier vehicle is 4WD it's a monster and should be off the road!
I reckon we should all drive the same type of vehicle! One colour, one model and everyone would be happy! Then no one would be different and the world would be a better place and those people getting around with thier 2 year old mentality (sorry, I don't mean to offend the ACTUAL 2 year olds) would be happy in thier utopia that they created. Or maybe we should all just get on the same gear that these idiots are on and it might not be so bad?

Sorry bout the long post, but like I said - I've had enough! :-S

Cop ya later!

Can you let me know what the model that everyone is going to use?? I'll have to start plans to stick one on a LandCruiser chassis.

All one colour??? And then how would some women find there car in WestField carparks??

I love my 4x4 but there are some things about 4x4's which are true, they do use more fuel eg. the same engine in a 4x4 will tend to use more fuel than in a car. 4x4's dont handle as well. they are not as safe - except for very new models which are coming closer to cars but not quite there yet and of those even less are as safe for other vehicles, the volvo is one of the first new 4x4's which keep other vehicles safety in mind. They dont accelerate as well (compared with cars of the same year generation). You also wear extra components which cost more money, and servicing most of the time costs more than the equivalent car. In my op if your not going to do any real off roading, stick with a wagon, some of which have just as much interior space as a 4bie, or get a suabaru or car based 4x4 which will take you onto dirt roads. Either way, i really like to go 4x4ing and a car or even 4x4 car will not go where i want it too, I am sure many of the 4x4's i see in the city will never see a pot hole - these people have no need to own their vehicle.

Yeah, sorry! I forgot to elaborate! The uniform model of car is a wonderful thing! It's a mystical magical car that comes from a fairy land far far away! It's energy efficient, environmentally friendly and is big enough on the inside to accomodate Mum with her 6 kids but not so big that it would be too much for dear ol Nan to manage in the bowls carpark! Not hard to imagine a car that would suit everyone's needs is it?

Oh and about the colour - a non issue - cause I also forgot to mention that they'd be perforoming frontal labotomy's on us all and removing any sense of individualility and imagination! Best get rid of those pesky traits! As for finding it in the carpark well the magical car would come to us! Sorted! Sorry! Too much sarcasm for one day!

"I reckon we should all drive the same type of vehicle! One colour, one model and everyone would be happy! Then no one would be different and the world would be a better place"

That's been tried in communist germany, communist romania and other selected commie countries. But even there they couldn't get a single colour... Or maybe we should also start wearing the same clothes too - Mao tried that in China;-)

One thing I know: it sure DID NOT make the world a better place.

IMHO, journos who can't find NEWS and publish rubbish and gossip instead should move on to other jobs. I'd love to censor idiotic journalism, but censorship too has been tried with not much success in the commie world...

Why don't some people simply GET A LIFE and stop worrying about why others are different...

I agree F4Phantom! The bottom line is - people are different! They want, need and like different things! And that is a beautiful thing! I just can't stand the fact that everything is lumped into one category - 4WD's. You just can't do that! I would support a seperate license for what I class to be 4WD's (my 80 Series that spends a good deal of it's life doing what it was intended to do!) but how do we classify it? GVM? Drive configuration? Physical dimensions? This may prevent some "city" (and i use that term hesitantly) folk from buying them unless they wanted them for thier off road ability - but not likely!

The world of 4WDing is so diverse that you simply can't pigeon hole it. Neither of those categories would work! And I think therein lies the problem. And it is a problem. The authorities can't find an answer to it and meanwhile my reputation as a person whilst I'm sitting in the drivers seat of my fourby is getting dragged thru the mud by d*ckheads journo's cashing in on a hot topic!

If someone is trying to merge in front of me, I let them in. If I'm shown the same courtesy, I wind down my window solely to give them a wave of thanks! I don't use my vehicle to intimidate, I keep it serviced, and if there's a way to make it run more efficiently then I check it out!

I guess I should stop taking stuff personally!

i would say men in 4x4's are actualy quite courtious on the road, me included, the biggest problem i have on the road with people not letting me in, being rude etc, is chicks in small cars, it's like they have something to prove "i just proved my self by not letting another bloke get the better of me". men usually dont have a hell of a lot to prove in 4x4's - perhaps like me they show them selves in the proving ground of mud. Also while i am here, i always flick my lights when i see a speed camera, the majority of blokes give a wave of thanks or are actually flicking me back when i am the one being warned. Women almost NEVER warn and almost NEVER acknolage your helpful warning. I know what they are thinking "look at me, i'm out of the kitchen & drving a car, lardy dardy da"

Just thinking out loud....Just how fuel innefficient are fourwheel drives anyway?

I drive a 105 Series, NA Diesel, few bits and pieces, so all up it weighs 3.1Tonnes with a full load of fuel, and a driver. It gets 11L/100km around town, and down to about 10 on a trip. I do drive to conserve fuel, but thats just me. My wife just took it up to Newcastle on the freeway, and I would expect the usage to go up to 13 or so (sits on 115 all the way).....

A commodore gets somewhere between 11.1 and 11.3 -- (Holden Media Release)
A nissan pulsar gets between 7.2 1nd 7.9 -- (Autoweb Site)

Are we that bad?

How can we even compare the two?

5 seats compared to 8.
Towing capacity about double (i assume)
4WD v's 2WD
Why would you buy a commodore?

i agree with you totally, but to be fair, get in a modern car diesel and you will find it will use more like 5 - 6L or less if its one of those little hatch backs. But either way it shows diesels are the go for the future, in fact mercedies now have an electric diesel proto and it is unbelievable in economy with all the power you expect.

"Why would you buy a commodore? "

It's cheap;-))))

BTW, why not ban old cars? That's what Europe and Japan does, they tax them out of existence. I paid some $850 tax on an old 1.6 diesel car in Germany while my uncle there was paying $50 for his new Merc.

Or maybe I should keep my mouth shut in case the politicians read this and adopt half of the idea, i.e. increase tax on old ones BUT KEEP IT THE SAME on new ones...

Seriously, I have worked for a couple. They are all the same. $$$ always comes first.

Chanel nine needs ratings to boost viewer numbers to boost advertising revenue.

I work for a company now that is involved with selling holden caprices to the Chinese government. It would make you sick to see how much they are being sold for at a profit.......

While I agree with Banjo, something has to give, and if they keep throwing chit, some will eventually stick...

With Howard showing the brains of a sun dried cowpat, wait till the next election - it will be an issue and it wont be in our favor .. yea there are heaps of votes in 4wds, but theres heaps of votes against war, and he won somehow with such a majority my date is still twitching.

Unloved 4WD owners feel they're picked on
By Bonnie Malkin Urban Affairs Reporter
August 23, 2005

More than 77 per cent of four-wheel-drive vehicle owners in NSW believe there is a backlash against them, a survey has found, and almost 20 per cent say other drivers have become more negative towards them since they bought their big cars.

"Without doubt, four-wheel-drive owners have an image problem, whether they deserve it or not," said Selina O'Connor, the corporate affairs manager at the insurance company AAMI, which conducted the survey.

The research, based on interviews with 2400 NSW motorists, found 68 per cent of respondents believed that four-wheel-drive vehicles might be safer for their occupants but were a greater threat to other road users.

Almost half of those surveyed were more concerned about having a crash with a four-wheel-drive vehicle than with a sedan or small car.

"Four-wheel-drive owners seem to feel safer; only one in five … four-wheel-drivers were concerned about having an accident with a vehicle of their size," Ms O'Connor said.

Driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle in a city was also frowned upon, with more than 60 per cent of the survey's respondents saying people living in cities should drive small cars.

More than half of those interviewed said they had seen owners of four-wheel-drive vehicles struggling to manoeuvre them in busy urban areas.

A spokesman for Four-Wheel Drive NSW & ACT, George Cottee, said some people were bound to dislike four-wheel-drive vehicles because they were big, but he defended their right to be on the road. "People tend to forget that the road is there for all users."

Drivers of such vehicles may be concerned about what other motorists think of them, but their own attitudes differ greatly from those who drive normal cars.

Only 38 per cent of those who drove four-wheel-drive vehicles thought their cars posed a greater danger to other road users; only 20 per cent were worried about having an accident with other four-wheel-drive vehicles. Thirty-two per cent of such drivers believed people in cities should drive small cars, and 16 per cent admitted battling to manoeuvre their vehicles in busy urban areas.

"....some people were bound to dislike four-wheel-drive vehicles because they were big......."

IMHO maybe these same people should drive at a safe distance behind these big vehicles as opposed to on thier tailgates, and thier size wouldn't be so much of an issue?

I know the size in a crash issue is still there but, just a thought...

Australia= Best lifestyle anywhere, Falcon’s, Commodores, 4WD’s crack a cold one down at the beach, the right to do and drive anything we want as long as it is within the Law.

One message to these Fing Dic* heads who have nothing better to do with there time than complain about everything. If you don’t like it GET OUT!!!

One more point how-many 4WD do you see involved in accidents with small cars or for that matter in accidents. That’s right bugger all, they are imagining shi* that is not happening.
