I'm looking at a SWB petrol Patrol (Maverick). Most of its work will be towing a 16" ski boat and short trips around
Vic High country. We are planing a trip to
Birdsville track, and
Flinders Ranges. Will a petrol with long range
tank be ok? I know a LWB would be easier, but apart from the short trips in Vic when we have two dogs, it's only ever the two of us.

Just spent 3 months touring in a swb diesel patrol.
From a space point of view it was fine for the 2 of us but we had the back seats out and a storage system cobbled together.
The weight of gear meant we did need a set of polyairs in the back as the rear springs on shortys are a bit soggy!
I can't comment on fuel economy of the petrol mav though I'd imagine a long range
tank or a couple of 20litre Jerrys would be the way forward. An extra
tank would make HD springs or polyairs in the back a must in my opinion.
We got 700km out of 80litres of diesel for highway driving.
A shorty is a great fun truck.
Mine is now sold as I've left Australia for the moment and I miss it already.

I suppose it depends on what size dogs, and if you plan travelling with them.
Petrols are thirsty as hell... 20/100 is not uncommon.
