G'day All,
I was wondering if anyone else who has put a lift kit in their vehicle is
experiencing some excess noise possibly coming from the drive shaft or tail shaft.
The noise is like a whering noise of somewhat. But under load the noise dissapears
and when you take your foot off the noise comes back sparatically.Iam not sure if
it is caused by the lift of maybe a shotty bearing or uni joint.Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Don

Take your foot off?

Lifting will show up dodgey unis in tailshafts pretty fast due to more angle on them.

I think you will find that it is the pinions at the diffs. I had the same problem and it turned out that the pinion just needed to be tightened up a little.. funnily enough it happened shortly after having diff lockers put in. Give the drive shafts a bit of a rattle around and if there is movement you will know.

If you have never had a go at these before there are 4 bolts between the diff and the uni joint. Take the bolts out and the drive shaft will be able to be levered out of position... if it just drops out the slip yolk probably needs a little extra grease but that is later on when you put it back together again. when the drive shaft is dropped you will see a large nut on the inside of the pinion, this is probably going to be loose. While you are there check out the pinion seals as they are pretty cheap to buy and if you have oil dropping from there it is a pretty basic job to replace the seal while you have the drive shaft off.

Hope this all makes sense.. it will when you get under the car and start taking stuff apart.

Cheers

I had some noises similar after I installed a 6 inch lift on my 105 series. Had a double cardan joint from a hilux put on the transfer case end of the front drive shaft as the angle was too far out of spec. for the unis. But if you have done the lift and not corrected the caster it could be on the diff end uni aswell. How high was the lift? I have read reports of high lifts with no noise but I have also read reports of mild lifts with this noise. Hope this helps. Phil.

Thanks Phil,
Where did you get the double carden joint from. And i take it that the hilux unit just bolted straight in.
Thanks

From memory, it was central coast wreckers or central coast 4wd wreckers.(NSW) I'm not sure what model it was from but as soon as I mentioned the hole centers (I think it was 60 x 60) they knew straight away which joint I was after as other people had done the same mod. They sent me the hilux shaft that had a bad bend in it, but that didn't matter as all I needed was the cardan joint. (I think it was around $150) I then had to get some driveshaft guys to put the hilux cardan on my cruiser shaft. (I think it was around $300 for them to do this and balance the shaft) All up it was around $500 so check everything else isn't worn or loose first.
How high is your lift and did you correct your caster?

Cheers Phil.
