Im going to set up a Tablet PC in my 4wd using a USB GPS attachment, are there any sites you can download free maps for programs like oziexplorer? I have not been able to find any and assuming its probably due to copyright. I will have to resort to scanning maps and stitching them together, was especially looking for a detailed flinders one

Stuart,
You can buy a seamless 1:50,000
Flinders Ranges map on single CD. Its the best going around, and I think costs about $100, but haven't priced it lately.
And what Tablet PC are you using? I've been using an NEC T400 - the tablet is excellent in the vehicle.
Cheers
Phil

Stuart,
I find the Raster 250K Mosaic; the Hema Great Desert Maps, and the Flinders 50k seamless cover the vast majority of 4wding you'll do from South Australia.
The map
shop at Unley (Carto Graphics) usually stocks them all. Don't think theres any legal way of getting them free. They have a website here
Cheers

Stuart, are you aware of the Plot Swap facility on ExplorOz?
(Navigate by the left margin of any page of the site under the TOPIC SEARCH, and click on PlotSwap).

Stuart,
If you like these then you can upload data for credits, also you can become a member and get permenant free access to the mapping system and 200 credits for downloads. As you may have seen the visitor access to the dynamic system allows 5 free
views then either credits or
membership are required. Anyway the options are all yours.
FYI: I have been trying to get some time to do some more work on the mapping outputs I have done heaps of update work on the data and as yet have not been able to complete the software. One of the major updates is access via selection critreria to our waypoint database and the ability to build .wpt file output for lists of waypints you select. I am also doing a dynamic map builder that will allow you to specify a map area and the layers you want enabled to build a custom map on the file and deliver it with full geo-referencing information. Ah for some more time and a clone or two.....
Take care and enjoy.

Stuart,
You're right about Copyright. However there are a few
places you can download free maps:
GPS Australia
OziExplorer
Perry-Castañeda Library
Map Collection

Hi Dave,
I think this depends on your vehicle. After fitting buckets, I needed to make a centre console. I use the tablet as the lid and it hinges up nicely.
The tablet also has a CF card reader, so I download my photos to the hard drive, and I can run the raster mosaic maps which are 700 Mb files. I can also keep all my maps and data on the hard drive.
I also find the 10.4 inch screen easier, and can work the whole lot with just the tablet pen, same as the IPAQ.
But I agree the IPAQs are easier to mount if you're short of space.
Cheers
Phil
