If the hubs are not looked and it's not in 4WD, nothing in the front diff should be turning.

So I guess no.

Spot on ....... If hubs are not locked and stubby lever is fully forward, everything in the front axle tube and pumpkin is having a total sleep. So the crunching noise must be something else.

Sounds nasty..... :-(

Good luck

After hearing the noise that broken CV's make on the weekend. Could that be it?

I second that!, Check the CV's, especially if it's worse at full lock.. but if your hubs are automatic, maybe there is a problem there and they haven't disengaged??? From memory the Nissans have an option of auto lock or manual lock, this is also something that may need checking.

Good luck!

I have made a few enquiries and it seems the auto lock function may have stuck in for a little longer than expected,,,...
No cause for alarm i was told....

Voxon, Might be the shear pins in the lokka's. Mine did the same a couple of years ago.
Just a thought.

...if the hubs arnt locked and its in 2wd then it shouldn't crunch - what about it you have full time 4wd like my 80 series gxl - then crunching?

...voxson - sounds like your GU's going to be fully prepared for the cape york trip next yr! you'll be able to get the rest of us out of trouble!

Hi Twigiee,

It appears that the auto locking feature didnt unlock properly..... (something about driving backwards to dis-engage) and the diff was sort of operating still and the lokka was engaging and dis-engaging as i was doing some tight steering this morning....
All ok now,, just a blonde moment...

The GU is fully prepared as of yesterday.... Fully equipped like the GQ was... I even bought one of those Bushranger Max air compressors,,,, and let me say it is like pulling up next to a service station compressor..

Next May cant come quick enough.....
Are we catching up this weekend?????

...bushranger max huh, I'll need to get a second 'dual cylinder foot pump' to keep up now! (one for each leg) ...and two cold beers to prevent overheating!

I'll be there this weekend - i'll give you a call.

Had a similar thing with my GU.
Jack up the front axle with both wheels off the ground then with 4wd disengaged via the gear lever turn each wheel back and forth by hand to make sure that they are unlocked. If they still make a clicking sound then one auto lock has bleep e itself.
If it is a grinding sound then the side you are turning may have a busted cv, but in the nissan this is unusual unless you have been really hammering it.
I finished up by putting in manual hubs which solved all probs.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.
