Hi

New user after a bit of info. Have bought a 2003 TD GX Prado. Heading to Gove in NT to live and wanted to put Cooper ST or BF Goodrich tyres on. Standard rims on Prado are 17 x 6 so I can go no larger than 225. Wanted to put 245/265 on.
Limited range in 17" at moment, has anyone fitted 16" rims and do they clear the brakes well or have they bought any 17" steel rims from anywhere??

The 16 inch rims do not clear the front brakes. Have heard of some people grinding a bit of the calipers off, but sounds too dodgy to me.

CMI Toyota here in Adelaide were stocking 7.5x17 wheels for the 120 series which would allow you to fit the better offroad tyres.

CMI never actually got any 17 x 7.5 steel wheels in, but there are aftermarket 17x 8 steels in white which fit the GX, we just did some 17 x 8 steel rims with 265/70/17 Cooper STT tyres this week.

The caliper grind is to take the thickness of the powdercoat off the caliper, where the rough casting is on the outside, if you wish to fit 16"s.

We have done 40+ 120's to 16" rims.

Thanks. With the 17 x 8 rims what skirts did you put on as the tyres will well and truly be outside the lines of the bus

the offset of them fits inside the fenders on GX and GXL 120's with no need for flares on the GX.

Can you tell me the offset on the rim and also the tyre size you are running them at?

Sorry, forgot to add. Are the 16" rims the same deal and if so what size tyres, also do you know any WA dealers who do this?

Darren,

About 12 months ago, I was in at CMI and Dave showed me the wheels. Had a whole stack of them - must have all been sold.

Cheers

I was there about the same time Phil, and the rims were a small first up batch to gather interest, and they never proceeded with the container load.

No worries
I have the 16's on mine. Yes you do have to grind/file the casting marks off the front calipers top and bottom. Rears fit ok.
Up to you though.

Forgot to mention, with 16's on it opens up the market on brands of what to fit and it also reduces the cost of tyres. 16's are more readily available than 17's at the moment but that will change as they become more common.

Mine is the GXL so already has flares.
Apparently they will fit under the guards of the GX as well.
Darren from ATS has made mention of this up higher. Darren has done alot of research on the 120's and is the man to talk to.
Cheers

Hi, U need to be wary about fitting 16"s as a replacement for the standard 17'' rims . There are issues of Compliance (17" rims were fitted to correct an overheating problem... I was told). I was threatened by a Toyota Dealer that he would hand in my Rego Plates if I presented a (saftey issue) non compliant vehicle at his workshop for service. I dont know if he can do that... but who wants that kind of hassle. Compliance is also important for Insurance. I settled for 265/70 x 17 BFG & am just home from an 11000 km sojourn to the kimberley's... very happy with tyre performance, no punctures. Also I advised my insurance that the tyres were "Oversize"........ Dot your i's & cross your T's. Good luck with your trip.
