Hi Forumites,
I am looking at buying a new Prado GXL or VX V6 Auto to replace the Patrol. The GXL looks pretty good but the VX gets the following driver control features + other safety stuff:
# Vehicle Stability Control
# Traction Control
#
Hill-start Assist Control
# Downhill Assist Control
The VX comes at a premium but after fleet discounts, etc I can get the price difference down to $5k. I am interested in
feedback from VX owners, or others that may have experience in driving VX vs GXL, as to the relative performance with and without features listed. I won't be doing hard core / extreme off-roading but do get out and about with 4WD club and do touring with camper trailer a couple of times a year. A lot of sand over here in the West too, so interested to know how
well the traction control works when sand driving c.f. LSD on the GXL.
The added electronics may be a reliability issue but I suspect that Toyota have this pretty
well sorted. The features look like good value for $5k but a mute point if driving benefit isn't there. Unfortunately the Toyota up/down ramp adds don't really give the right
feedback.
Regards,
Hugh

"The VX comes at a premium but after fleet discounts, etc I can get the price difference down to $5k"
Wrong . The price difference at cost to the dealership is 8k. If your VX price is only 5k more than your GXL price it means your GXL price is not as sharp as your VX price. There is no flexibility in the 8k diff. I should know. I sell fleet for Toyota ;).

In my experience selling these new 120's , the VX has never sold. We never carry one in stock as it inevitably has a birthday in our yard ;).. People buy GXL or Grande . Most 4wd journos rate the gxl a more handy off road vehicle than the grande / vx and they have none of the DAT fitted.

Damn I am so sorry but you are right, I just costed up the two and this shows you just how long it has been since I have quoted on a VX. The two owe prices are as follows with QLD stamp duty and on roads.
GXL auto v6
48963 list price
+2065 a/c
- 4855 dealer margin
-2448 hold back ( 5% of list price )
- 800 dealer claim ( if silver fleet )
______
42925
+4292 GST
______
47217
+1100 stamps
+700 dealer delivery
+ 700 reg & ctp
______
$49717 owe ( but dont expect this sort of deal from down the corner :) )
VX V6
57530 list price
- 5722 deal margin
- 2876 hold back
- 800 dealer claim
_______
48132
+4813 gst
______
52945
+1160 stamps
700 reg and ctp
700 deal delivery
______
$55,505 owe
_______
Price diff is $5788 so you were pretty close.
Most dealers will go to 3% hold back on one of these and no more.
VX in 3 years will be worth $1,000 more than a GXL .
Have fun !!!

Hi Rags and Dags,
Thanks for the info on pricing.
I am amazed at the difference in stamp duty between QLD and WA. Your stamp duty is ~ 30% of that charged in WA. The government is under a lot of heat on this topic but offered no relief in last budget.
The price delta is enough to consider purchasing a car from QLD. You don't sell interstate do you? If so: hcarlisle@orbitalcorp.com.au

Hi Hugh ,
would love to sell you a car but I would be $1500 above that cost price and I am guessing something like 3-4k to get the car over to you ??... We would also need to QLD address for your registration which could be tricky for you ;).
I would love to sell Toyota in WA , they have a captive market and might actually make some money out the Prado... ( not on your deal though Hugh ;) ) !.

Forget all the techno rubbish & get a GXL. Have spoken to an owner who was pushing his car hard on a dirt corner only to have the vehicle stability control take over, apparently very unnerving when it did. All these features are ideal for total novices to 4 wheel driving but of those with experience, many would rather turn them off.
I have never seen where traction control assists in sand in fact by my understanding it applies the brakes to the spinning wheel adding more load on the motor & reducing any momenteum you have. Traction in sand can be better got by letting a few PSI out.
I'm not sure if Toyota have sorted there Traction control out yet but many systems get confused at slow speeds on slippery surfaces particually snow & ice. Worth checking out.
& to complete my total dislike of these so called safety features isn't the
Hill start assist unit called a handbrake? ;-)
Took a 4 litre 6 speed Playdoe for a
test run on the weekend. Very impressive.
Cheers Craig..............

Thanks Craig,
I was leaning toward the GXL, just interested in
feedback on the VX. I think that the price diff will buy some add-ons for the GXL.
I like manuals but my wife is keen on getting an Auto this time round and by all accounts the 5spd auto is pretty good. We are taking both for a
test drive this Friday, so will be interesting to compare the difference.

Yes 5K will buy 2 lockers & a winch giving far better offroad ability for your $$.
You certainly wont be dissapointed with the new 5 speed auto. I believe it has a lower first gear for better down
hill control. Almost good enough to make this life time manual driver swap to an auto. Particually good coupled to the petrol motor on long muddy hills :-)
Cheers Craig.........

Hi Craig,
Not quite but close. Gear ratios from spec sheet as follows:
5spd auto: 3.520, 2.042, 1.400, 1.000, 0.716, R3.224
6spd man: 4.171, 2.190, 1.488, 1.193, 1.000, 0.799, R3.607
Same diff ratio: 3.727:1
How did you find the driveability with 6th gear available? Must get off the mark pretty quick.
Regards,
Hugh

Buy the auto for resale alone. We sell manuals at all of the blue moons. The fact they are a nicer thing to drive is just a bonus.

Sorry I meant the new 5 speed has a lower first gear than the previous 4 speed which tended to run away a little on steep hills.
I own a 96 KW diesel 100 series so with nearly twice the power & half a tonne less weight you bet it's quick off the mark & it doesn't take that long to get to 160 KPH either ;-)
If you are city bound the auto would be the go but for country lads like me the manual with it's better engine braking would be a little easier on the pads particually in the hills or when towing.
The only thing I didn't like about the petrol motor was it overrun between gear changes, I suppose due to the electronic throttle cable.
Cheers Craig..............
