Hi all,
We think we have narrowed it down to a LWB 4.2L diesel GQ. My wife and I are thinking of getting a fairly stock one, so we can modify it and then we know its done right.
Our question revolves around the issue of "What year"? was there a better year model than others? and the model numbers?
well here is a few of them;
GQ DX, GQ ST, GQ GLi, GQ LE, GQ Ti,
Then you have all of these in a GQ II (for eg, GQ II GLi)
and the odd one out, the GQ II RX
so god knows what all of these mean, does anyone know? and if they do, which one is considered the better one?
we are looking at a budget of about $6000-$7000 for the car only, in stock form.
so which one is the bets? and which one is the best we can afford?

S & N,
Don't get too hung up on all of these different numbers. For around 6-7 grand you can't be too picky. You may have to go without some luxuries as you could find a good stocky but base model range. From what I know DX is base model, ST middle range and Ti is luxury pack. If you have your mind set on a good , stock fourby in a particular range you probably will be looking long and hard. For that price you will be looking for an earlier year, 88- early 90's, especially for a 4.2 diesel, they have higher resale value than petrols. Hope this helps

Hi, we had a GQ RX. next step up from the DX. DX had five seater, then RX onwards had the 7 seater and carpet. Fairly basic but built tough. We found our 97 excellent and never let us down. Hope this helps, Michele

I'd suggest that you look for a DX. It's the most basic and therefore should be a bit cheaper. We went for a 1995 unit when we got ours. It has carpet that's been put in for extra warmth in the high country by the previous owner - and there are lots around that have this. It also has an after-market turbo (Dynamic) bolted on - which is also fairly common on the naturally-aspirated versions. One great thing is that the rear windows are not the openable type on sliders which rust out badly. We don't have that problem at all.
If you tend to want to go for the luxury version such as the Ti, then for that money I wouldn't expect much of the luxury items to be too reliable still (electric windows, etc).
Just my 2c

MIne is a '94 GQ 2 RX 7 seater 4.2 diesel with electric windows, central locking, split rear seats, indicator turn lights and fancy paintwork(that was before I took it bush lol) etc.
I doubt if you are going to find a later model GQ for $6-7000 and will probably buy around a 89/90 model. But 4x4 sales are down at the moment so you may be lucky
If you want to find out what all the various trims mean you could go to www.redbook.com.au and follow the html
I find that the Nissan has minor but annoying electrical issues. However it is a strong vehicle and very comfortable to drive. I had an OME
suspension fitted by ARB.

Don't forget the Ford Maverick, a rebadged GQ Nissan Patrol. Tend to have a slightly lower resale value than the Nissan, but for the same basic vehicle.

$6k for a Diesel 4.2? Good luck... Anything that cheap wont be worth poo. You will get petrol, or maybe a 2.8 diesel..
DX is base model, Ti is top model, but forget that.
GQ2 is late 91 onwards
look at www.gqpatrol.com for some tips on what to look for when buyin one.

My first one was a DX 89 4.2 diesel. Clocked just over 600,000 kms before its last big trip. Decided to upgrade it for a more comfy one (personal choice) so ended up with the one u see in the pic...RX 4.2 Diesel turbo with heaps of usable extras.
I chose to go the RX only because it had better interior and electric mirrors which come in very handy when negotiating ruts (drop mirror by switch to see where my rear
wheels are). Might sound foolish but believe me it helps in some cases.
As Truckster said, I doubt you will find a 4.2 Diesel for that kind of money, not one worth buying. People are only now starting to see how good they are and that keeps the price up.
The way I see it, if your planning to get real dirty with it, go the DX. My first one was excellent and is still going strong today. if your not a fussy owner and dont mind dirt and mud on the inside floor, then go the DX. Its the cheapest way to buy one.
Good Luck whichever way u go.

well what is a reasonable price to be looking at paying for one? people seem to be saying that im not spending enough, what is a more realistic figure? remembering that this will be a weekender/holiday vehicle, not our everyday car! so i dont want to mortgage the house for one.
thanks guys!

OK then , why a Diesel ?
You WILL pick up a nice Petrol Patrol for that sort of money , and if its being used sparingly , then the price of fuel isn't so much of a concern.
Presently , ULP is cheaper then Diesel anyway.
If you are paying say $7k for a petrol , or $10k + for a diesel , its going to take quite a while to recover your costs.
Dont get too hung up on 4wds need to be diesel , do some costings , you may be surprised.

The whole point of owning a diesel, for me anyway.... is range. A standard GQ Patrol
tank of 95 litres goes a long way further out there in the back of nowhere than a petrol version. No question.
Don't know why petrol advocates dont ever see this as desirable.

I'm not saying it isn't.
But , is this person going "out the back of nowhere" ?
Is range an issue ?
Heck , for the thousands of dollars in purchase price difference , fit a long range
tank.
For some people , diesel is ABSOLUTELY ideal , for some , its Heart before mind.
I'm NOT suggesting that the Diesel isn't the vehicle they are after , or, in fact the best suited. Just dont buy a Diesel , because "Everyone has one".
I think you will be sadly disappointed.

Just to give an idea, I bought GQ ST almost exactly 12 months ago.
Mine was SWB petrol (dual fuel), with Warn which, 2'' Lift & OME
suspension. I paid 7,000.
It was a great buy!
I don't thing that you can get 4.2 Disel and LWB for that price!!!

we were looking at the LWB 4.2 petrol, but we have heard that they have problems with cracking heads! also, that petrol have less chance of breakdown due to
water, because of no elecs under the bonnet!
If we were to fit a
snorkel, could we get the petrol in just as many
places as the diesel or not?

Have a search of the
forum, also the patrol forums for info on the cracking heads.. Its not rare in Petrol/LPG cars.
"that petrol have less chance of
breakdown due to water, because of no elecs under the bonnet!"

Shannon,
A GQ for 6 or 7 Gorillas will be an old, tired, worn out old beast. It has to be a dunger. It will have to have done at least 600,000 km.
Chances are the motor, gearbox, clutch and diffs will be stuffed.
A rebuild of the motor will set you back more than you purchase price.
I feel it will be a bottomless pit.
Sorry to sound pessimistic but nothing in this life is free.
Cheers,
Jim.
